Big week ahead for teams ranked in The Day coaches' poll

The past two weeks of state high school football have been a little slow because most conferences had teams take their CIAC-mandated bye week.

The season revs back up this weekend with six weeks remaining in the regular season. Week 7 is headlined by four Friday night games that will shape both the CIAC playoffs and The Day of New London Top 10 state coaches' poll.

The state's marquee game features second-ranked New Canaan (5-0), a three-time defending Class L champion, playing host to Greenwich (4-1). New Canaan hasn't lost a regular season game to anyone other than top-ranked Darien since 2013. The Cardinals' lone loss was to Darien (42-35).

Fifth-ranked West Haven (5-0) travels across town to play Notre Dame of West Haven (3-2) in one of the state’s fiercest rivalries.

Can anyone in the South-West Conference stop Newtown? Bunnell (4-1) will try when it plays host to the seventh-ranked Nighthawks (5-0), who’ve maimed their conference foes by a combined score of 224-27.

Friday’s other top matchup is Fairfield Prep at Cheshire. Both teams are ranked outside the top 10, are 4-1 and need to keep pace in the Class LL rankings. Prep is sixth in the rankings, the Rams seventh.

New London (5-0) is ranked 13th in the poll. Norwich Free Academy (3-2) received one 12th-place vote.
