Sources: ECC to vote on strength-based realignment and return of Putnam

The Eastern Connecticut Conference will hold a press conference Thursday morning, at which time — according to multiple sources — they are expected to announce a major realignment plan and the return of Putnam High School as the league's 18th member.

Gary Makowicki, retired Norwich Free Academy athletic director and commissioner of the ECC, invited media members to a 10 a.m. press conference at St. Bernard School, which will follow the annual spring meeting of the conference's Board of Directors.

The board, according to sources, will vote on Putnam's application for admittance, plus a new realignment plan which will change direction from the ECC's current enrollment-based divisional setup and focus on new divisions that will take into account the strength of individual programs on a sport-by-sport basis.

If one or both votes are approved, the changes will take effect in the 2018-19 calendar year. Putnam, which joined the ECC during a major expansion in 2000, left following the 2009-10 season to join the Constitution State Conference. The CSC, however, is disbanding after 2017 spring season, leaving Putnam without a conference home.
