    H.S. roundup: New London girls cruise past Bacon 62-41

    Colchester — Third-ranked New London cruised to a 62-41 victory over Bacon Academy on Friday night in an early-season matchup of girls' basketball unbeatens.

    Freshman Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick led the Whalers (5-0) with 17 points while a pair of seniors, Xaryia Melendez and Tai Pagan, each compiled double-doubles. Melendez finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Pagan had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

    Kellie Nudd scored 17 points for Bacon (4-1), which fell behind 15-6 after the first quarter and never recovered.

    In other games:

    • Maya Hillman contributed 14 points, 15 rebounds and five assists in Montville's 47-27 win over Lyman Memorial. Lauren Velazquez had 10 points and five steals while Abby Diamantini added 10 points and six steals for the Indians (3-1).

    • Woodstock Academy outscored Fitch 19-4 in the second quarter en route to a 48-29 victory over the Falcons in Groton. Frankie Foster scored seven points for the Falcons (0-4) while Nyseanah Ishmael and Charlotte Carney added six apiece.

    • Lexi Finnerty scored 31 points as Valley Regional beat Old Lyme 42-34 in a Shoreline Conference game. Sam Gray had 11 points and eight rebounds and Emily DeRoehn scored nine for Old Lyme (2-3, 2-3). 

    Boys' basketball

    • Ken Turner scored eight of his 23 points in overtime as Ledyard beat Woodstock Academy 74-62. Omar Whitmore (18), Jaiden Bickham (14) and Dorell Cagle (12) also scored in double figures for the Colonels (2-1). Chase Anderson scored 26 for Woodstock. 

    • Dev Ostrowski scored 33 points as East Lyme beat Fitch 87-54. Luke Leonard scored 21 for East Lyme (2-1), which led 46-21 at halftime. Ajia Brown had 16 points and Kiev Lucas scored 14 for Fitch (1-1).

    • Osman Surur had 20 points and Nik Hay scored 19 as NFA beat Bacon Academy 91-44. Nolan Molkenthin had 10 points for NFA (2-1), which led 29-7 after one quarter.

    • Jacoby Watson scored a game-high 24 points as Windham defeated Montville 59-55. Zach Southard scored 18 points to lead the Indians (1-1) while Ethan McKinney finished with 13 points, six assists and five steals. 

    • Markeith Conyers scored 20 points to lead Plainfield to a 51-34 win over Wheeler. Bowen Baker had 12 points and Ian Spracklin scored 11 for Wheeler (1-2).

    Swimming

    • Waterford defeated New London 91-65 in the Eastern Connecticut Conference and season opener for both schools. Dan Estrin won the 200-meter individual medley (2:36.34) and 100 butterfly (1:13.70) for the Lancers and Caleb Zane captured the 50 freestyle (30.03) and 100 free (1:11.59), while Jason Blain won the diving competition with 196.25 points to qualify for the state meet. Olivier Guijarro-Sines won the 100 breastroke (1:24.85) for the Whalers and was part of the winning 400 freestyle relay team (6:04.85).

    Wrestling

    • Ledyard went 1-2 in a quad-meet in Middletown, beating Ellis Tech 45-23 and losing to Middletown 38-27 and host Xavier 49-24. Connor Doran (106 pounds) and Brayden Grim (152) each went 3-0 for the Colonels and teammate Andrew Allen (195) was 2-0.
