Former fire chief will not be silenced

The recent letter to the editor, "Fire chief interferes with Old Saybrook vote," (Jan. 23), adds to the misinformation that surrounds the police boat's upcoming referendum.

I am no longer the fire chief in Old Saybrook as I hit the maximum five-year term limit. Since I am no longer the chief I have a right, as does the letter writer, to voice my personal opinions as an Old Saybrook taxpayer. The author felt that since I am entitled to a small (but appreciated) pension 20 years from now and an $88 a month tax abatement for serving as a volunteer firefighter, I should in some way give up my right to voice an opinion on an important issue like replacing a police boat.

Her letter grossly misstates my written comments related to the petition for the referendum. We all have a right to our own opinions when it comes to a town referendum. I can only hope that the voters learn the facts and make a truthfully informed decision.
