Shame on Day for selective standards in failing to knock Secretary Merrill

    xxxxx

I find it strange that no newspaper or self-styled good government organizations like the League of Women Voters has demanded the resignation of Secretary of the State Denise Merrill.

Merrill was caught telling a lie. That was good enough to demand Republican John Rowland to resign as governor. Why should it be any different for Merrill? Are the rules different for Democrat liars?

Emails ferreted out by Jon Lender of the Hartford Courant have proved Merrill lied when she said she never gets involved in individual cases such as that of Michael Robes. Complaints had arrived at the Office of the Secretary of State that Robes had convictions he failed to note on his applications for Notary Public.

The emails prove that Merrill (who The Day endorsed) ordered staff attorney Bernard Liu to back off and not strip Robes of his credentials seemingly only because Robes is a good Democrat and his stepson is a Democratic state representative.

That Merrill ordered a staffer to go easy on a Democrat crony is forgivable. Lying about it however is not.

Shame on The Day for its selective standards.
