East Lyme Finance Board member will improve process

In response to the letter, "Budget process restart after East Lyme ignored rules," (May 18), I offer this, my apology. The budget process is thorough and lengthy. I had been of the opinion that by the time the Board-of-Finance approved budget was presented to the town at the Annual Budget Meeting May 11 (not June 11 as referenced) that anyone interested in the outcome had ample opportunity to express their opinions throughout the process.

In my experience, the first selectman had previously presented the finance-board approved budget at the annual meeting and I had grown comfortable with that arrangement. While the annual meeting is the final opportunity for public comments, no further budget changes are made before the referendum vote. I now clearly see the importance to some citizens that all boards are properly represented at the annual meeting and I will make every effort to do so for the remainder of my term.
