More thoughts shared on heroin crisis

In reaction to the editorial, “Vital 1st step in attacking heroin crisis,” (Feb. 9) it is clear that change must commence.

Heroin overdoses, as stated by the editorial, provide insight on how widespread the issue is in the southeastern counties of Connecticut. While I agree that families’ identification of the issue is a good first step, rates of heroin usage is still on the rise and cannot be reduced without government interaction.

The author explains how the police are working to eliminate or slow the distribution of the drug, however only operating locally will not work. It is necessary to involve the state government in diminishing the heroin problem in order to keep all surrounding counties on the same page when it comes to enforcement.

Reducing the issue in one city, New London for example, can inversely impact a different town such as East Lyme. When hindering the work of the suppliers, buyers will go elsewhere.

I do agree that those looking to self-liberate from their addiction need long-term support and the government can provide programs for that. It is my hope that all authorities coming together can aid in relieving the heroin crisis.
