I am devastated that Benny’s in Waterford is closing. They always had that one thing that I needed and didn’t want to go searching for in a huge-sized store. No matter how off-the-wall an item was, Benny’s always seemed to have it when I needed it. They even sold underwear! 

Even more troubling is the way the Town of Waterford ignores what can be done with buildings and storefronts on Boston Post Road between Route 156 and Niantic River Road. Businesses of all sizes shy away from Waterford due to the strict and arduous permit applications and regulations. There is a new building that has not had any occupancy for at least a year. There is the old Dial Tone building wasting away. There is a gutted gas station that has been that way since I moved to Waterford 13 years ago.

I do admit that there has finally been some movement near Crown Pizza and that they have expanded. The long-empty storefront next door is finally up for lease. Come on Waterford, don’t forget about this part of our town. Boston Post Road would be a great location for small and large businesses, all year round. 

Waterford government, please support the needed growth in this area.
