    Our seashore folly

There have been many articles about how the lack of regulation in Houston facilitated the magnitude of the destruction. We in Connecticut would never allow such things to happen. Right?

However, I was in Fairfield shortly after Super Storm Sandy and witnessed very large homes being rebuilt in exactly the same location and configuration that resulted in their destruction. These houses were literally feet from the water and only a few feet above the high tide mark. I saw only one house that was being elevated on poles, which was no doubt considered the scourge of the neighborhood. The bottom line is that these massive houses should never have been allowed in the first place and with the potential for rising sea levels should not be rebuilt in the same location/configuration once destroyed. But of course we in Connecticut, with all our regulation, are better than Texas. Right? Or could it be that money talks in Connecticut just like everywhere else?
