Consider attending critical meetings on New London trees

A number of citizens have been dismayed recently by the removal of trees on New London city property. There’s an element of irony to tree removal coming at the same time as the new stormwater tax. Trees take up large amounts of water and regulate stormwater runoff. They remove carbon dioxide and filter out pollutants. Large healthy trees make a streetscape attractive, an important consideration as New London works to draw more people to city living.

But there are conflicts. Trees won’t be healthy growing in tiny spaces between impervious surfaces. They may interfere with utility lines and sidewalks. Some people don’t like shade or are fearful of falling branches.

It’s time to look at options. Green streets and walkability are important aspects of creating a more sustainable New London. As new construction is undertaken and streets upgraded, work going forward must include plans for protecting existing trees and for planting new trees so they will grow healthy and majestic.

The New London Shade Tree Commission will meet December 13 in City Hall at 4 p.m. A presentation on the tree inventory completed last summer will be given on January 30 in the public library at 5:30 pm. Both meetings are free.
