Norwich youth football team raising money for trip to Richmond, Va.

Norwich — The Norwich Senior Wildcats football team is looking for support from the community this week.

It’s not the Norwich Free Academy varsity football team — at least not yet.

These Wildcats are the champions of the 14U Norwich Youth Football League for the past three years and just completed a 12-0 season. Their online videos and congratulations spread to the point where organizers of a youth football tournament in Richmond, Va., noticed and invited the Norwich Wildcats to compete in the regional championship tournament Dec. 16 and 17.

The team needs to raise about $10,000 for transportation, lodging, food, tournament fees and miscellaneous expenses by its Dec. 15 planned departure date, coach Joshua Howarth said. Determined to succeed off the field as well as on it, the team had raised $7,000 as of Monday evening through a crowdfunding effort and a “tag day” with team members asking for donations outside local stores.

The team will have a fundraiser rally from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Uncle D’s Blazin BBQ, 146 W. Town St., Norwich. The event will feature raffles, Christmas carols and an appearance by Santa Claus.

“This is the first time a team from Norwich will be participating in a regional/national tournament,” the team flier seeking donations said. “We want this to be a successful trip, win or lose, but we need your help.”
