On the Side: Muir Glen tomatoes
Those who read my columns know the only canned tomatoes I use are those made by Muir Glen. For years I used just the diced tomatoes, plain or fire-roasted. Then I found some Muir Glen jarred crushed tomatoes at Ocean State Job Lot. I bought every jar I could find, because it is not available in jars anymore.
Then I began to use the company’s crushed tomatoes and fell in love again. About two months ago, I saw an article on Facebook about the best peeled canned whole tomatoes. The clear favorite was Muir Glen Organic Whole Tomatoes, San Marzano-Style with Basil.
I order both by the case (twelve 28-ounce cans per case) at Amazon and it comes to about $2.75 per can.
If you can find these in your supermarkets, they might be a little more expensive, but you may not want 24 cans of tomatoes. And, yes, the whole tomatoes should be hand-squeezed or mashed, but the flavor is incredible.
