    On the Side: Fiore

A few weeks ago, I listened to some authors read from a book they named “So a Bunch of Us Sat Down to Write... “ at the Old Saybrook library. After the reading and the signing, Norwich resident Michael Gordon, one of the authors, and his wife Joan decided we should go out to Fiore, also in Old Saybrook. I hadn’t been there in years, but when I lived in Old Lyme we had dinner often and enjoyed it.

I think the owners are still there. I first tasted the garlic knots, yeasty little rolls served warm to all customers. I had forgotten how delicious they are: buttery, topped with just a little salt and totally addictive. For my entrée I ordered their chicken piccata. The cutlets are pounded thin and sautéed with white wine, butter and capers. Were they always that good? I wondered. Are they the best I have ever had? Yes.
