Norwich — The city received three bids Tuesday to replace the aging Marine 1 harbor patrol and rescue boat, only one of which came within the available grant and local matching share total of $338,474.

The low bid of $335,175 was submitted by Metal Craft Marine Inc. of Cape Vincent, N.Y. Lake Assault Boats of Superior, Wis., priced the boat at $379,900, and Silver Ships Inc. of Theodore, Ala., submitted a bid of $496,830.

The cost for a trailer would be added to the total. Bids for the trailer ranged from $7,304 by Metal Craft Marine to $15,040 by Silver Ships. However, Silver Ships had the lowest price for the requested five personal flotation devices, $759, while Metal Craft Marine was highest at $1,221 for the five devices.

Norwich Fire Department obtained a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant of $253,856 that requires a 25 percent match of $84,618 for the plan to replace the current 1980 Marine 1 vessel that has leaks and obsolete equipment. The new Marine 1 also would replace a second smaller patrol boat.

Fire Chief Kenneth Scandariato said he was pleased that at least one bid came in within budget. He and a committee of firefighters that developed the specifications for the vessel will review the details of the bid and will make a recommendation to city officials soon.
