    Local roundup: New England downs Buffalo, 12-11

    Buffalo, N.Y. — Evan Kirk had 48 saves and newcomer Garrett Billings had a goal and three assists as the New England Black Wolves edged the Buffalo Bandits on Saturday night, 12-11, to snap a three-game losing streak.

    Pat Saunders and Mark Cockerton each had a goal and two assists for the Black Wolves (4-8) and Josh Johnson scored twice. Kyle Buchanan and Brett Manney each added a goal and two assists.

    Ryan Benesch had five goals and two assists for the Bandits (7-7).

    On Friday night, Brett Bucktooth had three goals and two assists, Pat Saunders added two goals and four assists, and newcomer Garrett Billings had a goal and three assists, but the Black Wolves lost to the Minnesota Storm 12-8.

    College baseball

    • Kenneth Olszewski went 4-for-4 with three RBI, two triples and a stolen base as Mitchell College downed Daniel Webster 15-0 in the first game of its New England Collegiate Conference sweep. Olszewski came back with three hits (two doubles), four runs and two RBI as the Mariners (12-2, 5-0) won the second game 16-4. Ryan Goodwin had three hits, including a double, with three RBI for Mitchell in the opener and Waterford’s Gavin LaLima had a single, three runs and two stolen bases. LaLima also had three hits and scored twice in the second game. Groton's Al Jordan Johnson (3-0) was the winning pitcher in the first game, scattering four hits over six innings.

    • Brendan McNeil went 4-for-5, including a triple, and scored twice as Coast Guard Academy beat Springfield 10-5 in the first game of its New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference doubleheader. The Pride won the second game 11-8. Kyle Wood had three hits and two RBI and Corey Sonnega had a single and two RBI for Coast Guard (10-3, 3-1) in the first game while C.J. Monroe had two hits, including a home run, with three RBI and three runs in the second game and McNeil had two hits and three RBI.

    • UConn dropped its first series since the opening weekend of the season as South Florida overcame an early 4-0 deficit to defeat the Huskies 8-6 in the American Athletic Conference. The Bulls (22-10-1, 5-1) won the series 2-1. Blake Davey, Jon Testani and Joe DeRoche-Duffin each went 2-for-3 for the Huskies (19-11, 3-3).

    College softball

    • Coast Guard won its first NEWMAC game of the season during a doubleheader split with Babson. The Bears (9-7, 1-3) won the opener 7-5 before losing to Babson (12-10, 4-4) in the second game 8-3. Hannah Ingerson led Coast Guard in the opener by going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Cherokee Strickland hit a two-run homer and Erin Lisko added a pair of hits. Jessie Richardson, Sara Cammuso and Casey Cruzpino drove in runs for the Bears in the second game.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Jordan Cook had five goals and McCarthy Brodaski added a goal and four assists as Mitchell beat Becker 11-9 in the NECC. Dan DiGiola had two goals and an assist for Mitchell (4-4, 2-0) and Evan Gennell scored twice.

    • Charlie Fay had four goals and three assists to lead Bates College to a 16-8 win over Connecticut College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Max Luing and John Cunningham scored two goals apiece for the Camels (2-9, 0-6).

    • Rob Holden had five goals to pace Clark past Coast Guard 9-4 in the NEWMAC. Louis DePaolis scored twice for the Bears (1-7, 0-2).

    Women's lacrosse

    • Emerson College built a five-goal halftime lead and cruised to a 17-7 win over Coast Guard in the NEWMAC. Niki Kruger scored her team-high 20th goal for the Bears (3-7, 0-4) while Ruby Surgent had two goals and an assist and Daria McKenna scored twice.

    • Moriah Greenstein had four goals and three assists as Bates downed Conn College 15-8 in the NESCAC. Lacey Hale scored twice for the Camels (2-8, 0-6).

    Men's tennis

    • Mark Guentert, Weston Fortna, John Hu and Michael Melampy all won singles matches as Coast Guard beat Wheaton 6-3 in its NEWMAC opener. Guentert and Fortna won at doubles for the Bears (5-3, 1-0) as did the team of Townsend Hirst and Hu.

    Men's outdoor track

    • Conn College's Ben Bosworth placed fourth in the 1,500-meter run (4:03.09) and fourth in the 800 (1:59.82) at the Amherst Spring Fling. Also for the Camels, Connor Trapp was third in the 5,000 (15:43.34), Aidan Cort was sixth in the 400 hurdles (58.66), Nick Fischetti was sixth in the javelin (105 feet, 5 inches) and the 4x400 relay team of Cort, Trapp, Sam McKeown and Andrew Peterson was sixth (3:38.57).

    Women's outdoor track

    • Conn College's Lauren Kennedy won the javelin (117-5) at the Amherst Spring Fling while teammate Aly Saperstein was second (116-5). Kennedy also placed fifth in the shot (33-2) for the Camels while Amanda Jacobsen was second in the pole vault (8-6.25) and fifth in the 200 (27.79), Olivia Vener was third in the high jump (5-5.5) and fourth in the 100 hurdles (19.25), Bella Franz was third in the 1,500 (4:53.07), Ashley Curran was fourth (4:53.38) and Alex Fromme sixth (5:02.60), Mary Goulding was sixth in the 100 dash (13.27) and Conn placed third in two relays — the 4x100 team of Tori Kenyon, Jacobsen, Gianna Rocchio and Goulding (54.52) and the 4x400 team of Rocchio, Franz, Vener and Casey Sullivan (4:29.64).

    Boxing

    • Unbeaten world champion Shelly Vincent, a New London native, retained her Universal Boxing Federation title with a unanimous decision over Christina Ruiz on Friday night at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I. Vincent (14-0) successfully defended her UBF super bantamweight title and also captured the vacant International Boxing Association 122-pound world championship.
