    Avery Point's opener in World Series rained out

    Enid, Okla. — UConn-Avery Point's opening game in the NJCAA Division II World Series was postponed by rain on Saturday.

    The game, originally scheduled for a 4 p.m. start on Saturday, is scheduled to begin on Sunday at noon. The Pointers will play Madison College (Wisc.).

    One game in the double-elimination tournament was played. Western Oklahoma routed Catawba Valley (N.C.) 15-5. The second game between Frederick (Md.) and Lincoln Land (Ill.) was suspended by rain after three innings with Frederick leading 7-0. The game will resume Sunday at 10 a.m.

    In other college baseball action:

    • Sixth-seeded UConn was eliminated by No. 2 East Carolina 4-2 in the semifinals of the American Athletic Conference tournament at Clearwater, Fla. The Huskies (35-25) have an outside chance of earning an at-large bid into the NCAA tournament, but will have to wait until the field is announced on Monday. East Carolina (39-20) will play top-seeded Houston in today's final at noon.

    UConn left 13 runners on base, including the bases loaded after scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth. Blake Davey went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles for the Huskies while Bobby Melley, Jack Sundberg and Willy Yahn added two hits apiece.

    H.S. baseball

    • Old Lyme earned the No. 4 seed and will play host to No. 5 Cromwell on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the Shoreline Conference tournament. The other three games are No. 8 Haddam-Killingworth at No. 1 Morgan, No. 7 Coginchaug at No. 2 North Branford and No. 6 Valley Regional at No. 3 Portland. The semifinals will be played on Thursday at the site of the higher ranked team and the championship game will be played Saturday, May 30, at Dodd Stadium in Norwich at 7 p.m.

    H.S. boys' lacrosse

    • Henry Hunt had 11 goals and one assist as Old Lyme closed its regular season with a 19-8 nonleague win over Norwich Free Academy. Jake Fenton added three goals and five assists for the Wildcats (13-3) while Ian Humphreys and Matt Cushman each scored twice and goalie Ashton Bohan stopped 11 shots. Kyle Ton scored three goals for NFA (8-8).

    • Guilford outscored East Lyme 9-2 in the second half to pull away for a 15-4 nonleague victory. Zane Smallidge had two goals and one assist for the Vikings (11-4) while Evan Opsahl had two assists and Mark Wojcik and Aaron Dixon each scored a goal.

    H.S. boys' tennis

    • New London/Wheeler ended its regular season with a 5-2 win over Montville. The win made New London/Wheeler players eligible to play in the CIAC Class S individual tournament as the Whalers (8-8) reached the required .500 winning percentage by finishing the season on a three-game winning streak. Bahaa Hoda won his singles match to improve to 12-4 and New London/Wheeler also got wins from the teams of Bharat Dhyani-Deyvon Verdini, Prince Omotosho-Nigeria Davis and Mischael Faurelien-Yan Carlos Santos. Hunter Stepanian and Gerald Aquino won singles matches for Montville (5-10).

    • Old Lyme completed a 19-1 regular season in the Shoreline Conference with a 6-1 victory over North Branford. Brandon White won 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 1 singles for the Wildcats, who also picked up three forfeit wins and singles victories by Luke Grabowski and Charlie Dahlke.

    H.S. girls tennis

    • Montville beat New London 4-3 in a nonleague match. Meagan McAdams and Lara Huapaya won singles matches for Montville (7-7) along with the doubles teams of Claire Rummel-Kayla Andrews and Indigo Whisman-Amanda Hester. Lillian James at Susane Ortizdevillate won singles matches and the doubles team of Blamely Cepeda and Katelyn Morales for New London (8-7).

    H.S. softball

    • Old Lyme swept New London in a nonleague doubleheader to qualify for the state tournament, winning the opener 29-2 and the second game 13-7. Kyra Teixeira hit for the cycle for Old Lyme (8-12) in the opener, driving in five runs and scoring six times. Liz Richard homered, drove in three and scored three times, Audrey Gavin singled, doubled, tripled and scored four times, Rachel Hayward scored six times, Lexi Duddy drove in three runs and Molly Biega drove in two runs. Kate Ashbey had two hits for New London (0-19).

    In the second game, Bella Cohen drove in three runs and Richard scored four times for Old Lyme. Liliana Figeuroa and Nikita Terry had two hits each for New London.    

    College men's lacrosse

    • Briggs Barton on Connecticut College received honorable mention on the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association team. The senior attack scored 29 goals and 12 assists to lead the Camels with 41.
