    Local roundup: Schooners score three in ninth to rally past Newport

    Groton - Ben Ruta's RBI single capped a three-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning which lifted the Mystic Schooners to a 7-6 win over the Newport Gulls in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game on Saturday night at Fitch High School.

    Jesse Berardi (St. John's) hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded for the first run in the ninth, and the other two runners moved up on a throwing error. A wild pitch then tied the game and Ruta (Wagner) won the game with his single.

    Derek Jenkins (Seton Hall) and Lou Iannotti (Quinnipiac) had two hits each for the Schooners (15-7).

    Tigers hang on

    • The Connecticut Tigers took a 7-2 lead into the seventh inning and held on for a 7-6 win over the Vermont Lake Monsters in a New York-Penn League game. Joey Havrilak hit a three-run homer and Josh Lester had a two-run shot for the Tigers (8-7). Patrick Mackenzie had three hits and Jose Zambrano, Kade Scivicque and Havrilak had two hits each for Connecticut.

    Zone VI Senior Legion

    • Ledyard/Pawcatuck lost to Danielson, 12-3. Ryan Francis drove in two runs for Ledyard/Pawcatuck (9-9).

    SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

    • Waterford scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning, beating Tri-County 8-4 on Friday. Waterford starting pitcher Cody Cleary struck out seven and homered to help his cause. Anthony Jordan had two hits and drove in two runs for Waterford (4-0) and Sam Strout pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the win. Andrew Perry doubled twice and Andrew Gagnon had two hits for Tri-County (2-1).

    District 10 LL baseball (9-10)

    • Wyatt Verbidge singled, doubled and drove in three runs and Pat Obrey doubled twice and drove in two runs as Pawcatuck beat North Stonington 16-2 on Friday. Matt Urso got the win, allowing one hit over three innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Chase Gouvin had three hits and Austin Linicus had two hits for Pawcatuck and Kyle Kessler had the only hit for North Stonington.

    District 10 LL softball (9-10)

    • Waterford beat New London 22-1 on Friday. Anna Donahue, Emma Marelli, Maddie Burrows and Anna Dziecinny had three hits each and Milena Walker singled and homered for Waterford. Jaleen Nazario singled for New London.
