    Local roundup: Schooners split a doubleheader at Dodd

    Norwich — The Mystic Schooners split a New England Collegiate Baseball League doubleheader with the Danbury Westerners at Dodd Stadium on Tuesday night, winning the opener 6-1 before dropping the second game 3-2. Both games were seven innings.

    In the first game, the Schooners took advantage of eight walks from Westerners starter Jeffrey Ledesma, scoring their six runs on just four hits.

    A sacrifice bunt by Lou Iannotti (Quinnipiac) put runners on second and third in the second inning and a chopper in front of the plate by Chase Livingston (Rhode Island) scored Dan Hoy (Princeton) with the first run of the game. After a pair of walks to load the bases, Jesse Berardi (St. John’s) ripped a three-run double down the right-field line to make it 4-0 and Ben Ruta (Wagner) followed with a double for a five-run Schooners lead.

    Schooners starter Mike Adams (Wagner) pitched six innings, struck out three and walked four.

    The Schooners took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning of game two, but Danbury scored the eventual game-winning run in the sixth on a two-run single by Brendan Cox.

    The Schooners (18-12, second place in the Southern Division) left 10 men on base. They will travel to Sanford, Maine, to take on the Mainers tonight.

    Zone VI American Legion

    • C.J. Leindecker pitched a three-hitter and struck out seven as Niantic defeated Waterford 7-3. Matt Abbey had two hits and two RBI for Niantic (17-7) while Austin Toback added a pair of hits and Mike Morgan scored two runs. Chase Speller was 2-for-2 and Justin Keating had a hit and scored twice for Waterford (16-8).

    District 10 LL softball (9-10)

    • Ledyard defeated Waterford 5-2 in the first game of the best-of-three championship series, getting a 16-strikeout performance from Samantha Money. Money allowed just three hits, while also adding three hits and two runs scored. Sara Cox and Samantha Marcotte each singled for Ledyard in what would be the deciding second inning for Ledyard, with pinch runner Jennifer Towne scoring the go-ahead run. Ledyard catcher Iyana Kirvan threw out two runners. Maddie Burrows and Milena Walker combined for a 12-strikeout, five-hit performance for Waterford and Adrianna Donahue earned all three hits for Waterford including a double.

    • Anna Dziecinny and Emma Marelli each went 3-for-3 and combined to score seven times between them as Waterford defeated Groton/Mystic 18-1 Monday in the semifinals. Milena Walker tripled, Anna Donahue and Maddie Burrows doubled and Lucy D'Amico singled for Waterford, while Burrows and Walker combined for nine strikeouts.

    State Section 2 Junior League softball (13-14)

    • Katherine Sanford pitched a no-hitter as Pawcatuck/Westerly defeated Madison/Guilford 17-0 Monday in a mercy-rule shortened game to capture the best-of-three series in two straight games and move on to the state championship round beginning Saturday in Orange. Megan Albimonti was 4-for-5 with five RBI and Colette Dreher's second-inning, bases-clearing triple highlighted a 10-run second inning. Pawcatuck will meet Fairfield in a best-of-three series for the state title.

    District 10 LL baseball (11-12)

    • Jared Burrows pitched a complete-game, one-hitter, striking out 12, as Waterford defeated Old Lyme 5-0 to advance to the best-of-three championship series beginning Thursday at East Lyme. Trey Brennan had two hits, including a two-run home run, Ryan Salvador had three hits, Burrows had two hits and Luke Sokolski had a double for Waterford. Robert Zawacki added a spectacular play in center field, throwing a runner out at home plate. Colby Andrews had a double and Tait Sawden pitched a solid game for Old Lyme.

    State Babe Ruth (14)

    • Waterford dropped its final pool play game to Stamford, 6-1 Monday. Trevor Yeomans had an RBI single and Drew Rocchetti added two hits for Waterford, which clinched a berth in the elimination round beginning Saturday. Waterford will be the No. 2 seed from the American League pool.

    UConn's Stewart named To Lombardi Award watch list

    • UConn redshirt senior linebacker Graham Stewart was named to the Watch List for the 2015 Rotary Lombardi Award. Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage. Stewart started all 12 games at linebacker for the Huskies in 2014 and finished third on the team with 94 tackles and led the Huskies with 10.5 tackles for loss. He recorded a career-high with 12 tackles and a sack in a win over UCF. Stewart played football at Xavier High School and was an all-state and All-Southern Connecticut Conference selection. His team won the Connecticut Class LL state championship with a 13-0 record and was first in final state rankings as a senior.
