Mitchell's Fulmer Garfield ready to go

Dana Fulmer Garfield appreciates the value of collegiate athletics.

She's seen it from all angles.

During her undergraduate days at the University of South Carolina, she excelled both on the softball field, earning second team All-America status, and in the classroom.

She made a successful transition into a Division I coaching career.

Since 2006, she's worked as athletic administrator for Mitchell College.

Her well-rounded athletic experience will come in handy in her new position as Mitchell's interim athletic director.

When Mo White left last month to become the United States Merchant Marine Academy's Director of Physical Education and Athletics, Garfield replaced her good friend. Garfield had held the position of associate athletic director.

Garfield has been on the go ever since.

"It's been a little whirlwind here," Garfield said. "In any transition, there is a lot going on. ... The most difficult thing is just finding enough time in the day to actually physically complete all the tasks."

Given her background, she appears to be a great fit.

Preparing to start a family, Garfield decided to leave the coaching business for the administrative side of athletics. She left her job as Providence College softball coach after an eight-year run and eventually became the associate athletic director at Mitchell.

She helped White guide the program's transition to a full-fledged Division III program. They worked together every step along the sometimes bumpy journey.

Never did she think she would eventually replace White.

"I had two young children, so I wasn't necessarily seeking athletic director opportunities," Garfield said. "It definitely wasn't something I was pursuing, but it is something I definitely feel prepared for."

"... Mo gave so much of herself to this program and this school. And she really has a love for Mitchell, and still does. ... It was very difficult decision for her. She went back and forth for quite some time. For her, it was a new challenge and a great offer that I don't think anyone would have turned down and it allowed her to be closer to her sons as well."

Before departing, White helped prepare Garfield for the change of command. Mitchell president Janet Steinmayer discussed the interim position with Garfield, who eventually was offered and accepted the job.

Garfield is treating it as a trial to see if the job suits her and her family. She has the ability to return to her associate athletic director's job at any point. A decision will be made on the position in the spring.

This upcoming sports year, Garfield will spend as much as time as her job allows on the sidelines. Her two young girls — Addison and Tatum — also will be rooting for the Mariners.

Mitchell's athletic program is on the rise. The Mariners regularly compete for New England Collegiate Conference championships, winning 12 under White. They've qualified for four NCAA tournaments, two straight in baseball.

"I directly correlate (our success) to the work that coaches have put in, their tireless hours recruiting and bringing kids on to the campus at Mitchell and showing them what a hidden gem this place is," Garfield said. "Also, once we get them here, we've provided them with a phenomenal experience.

"... They have a friendly and warm staff that's there for their experience. I'm very proud of where we've gone. I'm a super competitive person. I had a very successful playing career as an athlete myself. ... I want to see all of our sports in championships."
