Black Wolves welcome Toronto to Mohegan Sun

The New England Black Wolves will face the winless Toronto Rock (0-5) at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Only winless doesn’t sound like the right word to describe Toronto, which finished 14-4 in the National Lacrosse League last season, swept the season series against the Black Wolves and reached the 2015 Champion’s Cup final before losing to Edmonton.

“I’m not sure where their head space is at,” Black Wolves coach Glenn Clark said in a conference call this week. “Obviously, they don’t like being 0-5, but I don’t view them as an 0-5 team. Record, whether they’re 0-6 or 6-0, we break the team down and record really doesn’t play a part.”

“Toronto is desparate,” New England forward Shawn Evans said. “They need a win and will throw everything at us.”

The Black Wolves (3-2) are coming off a 12-10 loss at Buffalo on Feb. 6, which Clark called a disappointment.

New England is led by Evans with 13 goals and 17 assists, while Kevin Crowley has 10 goals and 14 assists and Pat Saunders 13 goals and nine assists. The team added former No. 1 draft pick Jordan Hall (486 career points) through a trade Friday with the Rochester Knighthawks.

Toronto is led by Rob Hellyer (11 goals, 15 assists). Josh Sanderson, who led the Rock with 102 points last year, could play his first game of the season. He was moved to the active list this week after being placed on the physically unable to perform list at the start of the year.
