    Local roundup: Mitchell baseball remains in the winners' bracket

    New London — Kyle Hartenstein went 4-for-4 with five runs and two RBI as the top-seeded Mitchell baseball team downed No. 4 Lesley 10-5 Friday in the first round of the New England Collegiate Conference double-elimination tournament.

    Mitchell (25-9) will play host to No. 3 Southern Vermont at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Southern Vermont beat No. 2 Elms 5-3.

    The winner of Mitchell-Southern Vermont advances to Sunday's final, while the loser will play at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Lesley-Elms.

    Hartenstein singled with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning with the score tied at 5. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on Tyler Pina's fielder's choice and scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error during that play.

    Chandler Whitney (3-for-3) singled home Pina to push the Mariners' lead to 7-5.

    Mystic's Tristan Hurley had two hits, including a double, and two runs for Mitchell and Pina had two hits, including a double, with two RBI. Jack Finnegan also went 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

    Domenick Giaramida allowed four hits in 4.2 innings of relief with three strikeouts and no runs to earn the win.

    In other games:

    • Avery Point beat Globe Institute of Technology 6-4 as Shea Dooley picked up his second win of the season. Dooley (2-4) allowed six hits and one earned run over six innings. Rob Sprafke doubled twice and Tom Caravetta (two runs) and Justin Santiago (two RBI) also had two hits each for the Pointers (18-16).

    H.S. baseball

    • Chris Munzer pitched a three-hitter with 14 strikeouts to lead Wheeler to its first win of the season, 8-3 over Putnam. Evan Jones had two hits, including a double, with two runs and an RBI and Alex Haines scored twice for Wheeler (1-6).

    • Greg Bereton had three hiits, two runs and an RBI as Norwich Tech edged Killingly 7-6. Brenden Bastien had an RBI triple for Norwich Tech and Connor Dulin stranded the tying run at third in the bottom of seventh.

    • Matt Kane had three hits, four RBI and four runs scored as Old Lyme defeated Hyde/Hillhouse 22-3. Ron Losacano had two hits and Cooper St. Germain had a double and three RBI for the Wildcats (4-7).

    H.S. boys' golf

    • Stonington remained unbeaten with a 7-0 win over Wheeler. Jack Ognisty and Pete Holliman of Stonington (6-0) shared medalist honors with 38s and teammates Jack Glenn, Will Cavalier and Tyler Snelgrove also won their matches. Stonington picked up a pair of Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division wins on Thursday, beating Plainfield and Griswold by 7-0 scores.

    • Wheeler beat East Lyme 4.5-2.5 as medalist honors were shared by Wheeler's Mike Anderson and East Lyme's Cristian Brown with 44s in the No. 1 match. Jake Umphlett and Matt Worobey won their matches for Wheeler (1-3), which won the medal point 190-196. Travis Franco and Quinton Dean won matches for East Lyme (0-5).

    • Norwich Free Academy picked up a pair of wins, beating Waterford and St. Bernard by scores of 7-0. Jack Sullivan of NFA was the medalist with a 38 and Spencer Molkenthin, Noah Straub, Miles Joyner and Sean Gilot also won matches for NFA (7-1). Waterford (6-3) beat St. Bernard (1-6) 7-0.

    • Medalist Mason Swaney shot a 40 and Old Lyme defeated Hale Ray 166-203 in a Shoreline Conference match at Fox Hopyard. Graham Aird shot a 41 for Old Lyme.

    • Montville beat New London in an ECC Medium Division match on Thursday. Chris Bouchard of Montville was the medalist with a 40 and Sam Gaboury and Brian O'Sullivan also won matches for the Indians (3-2, 1-2). Kyle White and Tim Glavan won matches for New London (3-5, 1-4).

    H.S. girls' golf

    • NFA beat Bacon Academy 228-264. Hannah Slocum of NFA (3-3-1) was the medalist with a 46.

    Women's water polo

    • Connecticut College lost to George Washington 9-8 in its opening match at the Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship at Cambridge, Mass. Kelsey Millward had six goals, Sarah Sovia made five saves and Sam Pierce and April Anderson also scored for Conn.
