    Local colleges: Freshman Taminger stars for CGA track & field team

    New London — Coast Guard Academy freshman Ben Taminger earned Co-Rookie of the Year honors as he won the 800 meters and was part of the winning 4x400 relay team Saturday at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Championship for men's track.

    Coast Guard was third with 143 points. MIT won its 16th straight NEWMAC title with 304.5 points, while WPI was second with 169.5.

    Taminger took the 800 in 1 minute, 56.32 seconds while the 4x400 relay team of sophomore Andrew Ireland, Taminger, freshman Nicholas Frystack and sophomore Raeford Penny won in 3:20.40.

    The Bears earned six additional all-conference honors with second-place finishes.

    Darius Adams was second in the long jump (21-6.75) and fifth in the triple jump (43-6.5). Michael Frick was second in the pole vault (14-11), Sawyer Stanton was second in the high jump (6-2) and Justin Jezuit second in the discus (136-01). Jacob Pawlina was second in the javelin (170-09) and fifth in the 200 (22.35). Brett Foster was second in the 1,500 (4:01.41) and fourth in the 800 (1:58.23).

    Luke Rehfuss took third place in the 400 hurdles (57.07), while Denis Daly was third in the pole vault (14-5.25) and Kevin Petow third in the 5,000 (15:32.29).

    Andrew Brown was fourth in the 3,000 steeplechase (9:42.52), Tyler Templeton fourth in the 100 (11.03), Michael Bishop fourth in the 200 (22.28) and Zach Velasquez fourth in the 5,000 (15:38.06). Caleb Teachout was fifth in the 1,500 (4:04.66).

    In other meets:

    • Connecticut College's Ben Bosworth was second in the 1,500 in 3:53.41, as the Camels were 10th (16 points) at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship at Amherst. Niall Williams was sixth in the 1,500 with a time of 3:56.65.

    In relay events, Conn's Connor Trapp, Williams, Price Day and Bosworth were fifth in the 4x800 (7:50.69) and Nick Fischetti, Arlo Siegel, Andrew Peterson and Blake O'Neal were eighth in the 4x400.

    Women's track

    • Senior Monet Masters and sophomore Caitlin Piker earned all-conference honors with second-place finishes as host Coast Guard placed fifth at the NEWMAC Championship. Masters was second in the pole vault (10-6) and Piker second in the javelin (121-03). MIT won for the eighth straight season, finishing with 201.5 points. Coast Guard finished with 80 points.

    Gabrielle Troise was third in the shot put (39-0.25) and the hammer (150-11) for the Bears, while Alexia Troise was third in the discus (134-0) and fifth in the hammer (143-09). Ashlee Johnson placed fourth in the 800 (2:21.36). Jessica Mulroy was fifth in the 3,000 steeplechase (12:00.10), Madison Ahlers fifth in the 400 (1:00.02) and Tara Larkin fifth in the javelin (107-03).

    • Conn's Bella Franz was second in the 800 (2:11.67) and Emily Senatore second in the discus (123-5) as the Camels (35 points) finished eighth at the NESCAC Championship at Amherst. Lauren Kennedy was third in the shot put (38-0.75) and third in the javelin (126-10), while Aly Saperstein was sixth in the javelin (119-9). Emily Winter was eighth in the 3,000 steeplechase in 11:35.47. In relay events, Conn's 4x400 team of Ashley Bjorkman, Franz, Shannon Kennedy and Ivana Lamptey was seventh (4:12.58) and the 4x100 team of Lamptey, Kenzie McFarland, Kaitlin Thomas and Tori Kenyon placed eighth (50.98).

    Baseball

    • Avery Point clinched a spot in the NJCAA Region 21 Div. II tournament with a doubleheader split with Dean, winning the opener 4-0 and losing the second game by the same score. Nick Goglia (5-3) went the distance for the win in the opener, allowing five hits over seven innings with three strikeouts and one walk. New London's Josh Vincent (4-2) took the loss in the second game, allowing five hits and one earned run over 5.2 innings with six strikeouts and no walks.

    Vinny Pallisco had four hits in the two games and drove in two runs for Avery Point (19-17, 6-4). Mike Corso and C.J. Caprio had two hits each in the opener. Dean (14-18, 3-5) plays CCRI (4-4) in a doubleheader next Saturday to determine Avery Point's opponent.

    Men's lacrosse

    • John Uppgren had four goals and five assists and top-seeded Tufts pulled away from No. 8 Conn for a 16-10 victory in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC tournament. Jordan Foster finished with four goals and two assists for Conn (7-9).

    • Coast Guard was held to a season-low six goals in a 21-6 loss to Babson in the NEWMAC. Jack Pope had three goals and assist for Coast Guard (10-6, 3-4), his fifth hat trick of the season and his second in as many games. Ian Logan added a goal and an assist and Justin Huemme and Anthony Wyler each added a goal.

    Rowing

    • The Conn College women's varsity four won the gold medal at the New England Championships in Worcester, Mass. The Camels posted  winning time of seven minutes, 56 seconds in the grand final. Senior captain Sophie Sharps served as the coxswain. In other races, the Camels took fourth in second varsity four grand final and won the petit final in the women's novice four. In the men's varsity four, the Camels finished third in the petit final.

    Women's tennis

    • Emily Migliorini won her No. 2 singles match in Conn College's 6-3 loss to Hamilton in the NESCAC. The Camels fell to 10-10, 1-7.
