    Local roundup: Homers lead Schooners to victory

     Groton — The Mystic Schooners hit three home runs and beat the Valley Blue Sox 9-2 on Wednesday night in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game.

    Martin Figueroa (Rhode Island) hit a three-run shot in the second inning, Ryan Ramiz (Seton Hall) hit a two-run homer in the second and Chase Lunceford (Louisiana Tech) hit a solo shot in the seventh.

    Former Stonington High and Avery Point standout Doug Domnarski (UConn) earned the win. Domnarski (1-1) allowed four hits and one earned run over 5.2 innings with six strikeouts and four walks. Casey Baker (Stony Brook), Brett Bond (Missouri) and Lunceford had two hits each for the Schooners (5-6). 

    Zone 6 Senior Legion

    • Collin Bakken pitched a four-hitter as Waterford beat Norwich 3-0. Chase Speller doubled and Brent Conderino drove in two runs for Waterford (5-2). Yamil Dip had two hits for Norwich (3-6).

    • Miles Coe hit a two-run double in a three-run first inning and Niantic went on to a 3-1 win over Moosup. Trevor Delesdernier pitched the first 5.1 innings for the win and Nehemiah Knight finished up to earn the save for Niantic (8-0).

    • Quantique White pitched a three-hitter as New London beat Willimantic 1-0. White struck out nine and walked two. Jake Parizo singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and scored the winning run when pinch-hitter Aidan Brennan singled. Timmie Jackson had two hits for New London (8-5).  

    • New London, which was off to a 12-0 start, has forfeited five games for using an ineligible player. Zone 6 Commissioner John Krot announced New London forfeited wins over Norwich, TriTown, Jewett City and Danielson (two).

    CHSCA baseball all-stars

    • The Connecticut High School Coaches Association will play an all-star doubleheader at Palmer Field in Middletown on Saturday. At 11 a.m. the Connecticut Public School Senior all-star team will play the Connecticut Parochial School all-stars and the Connecticut Junior Select team will play a Massachusetts team at 2 p.m.

    Justin Keating of Waterford, Jeremy Sagan of Montville and Matt Spang of East Lyme will play on the public school team and Alex Petchark of Waterford is on the Connecticut Junior Select team.

    District 10 softball (11-12)

    • Montville outlasted Groton/Mystic 21-18. Eva Peltier was the winning pitcher and Brooke Taylor and Reagan Anderson had doubles for Montville. Gemma Peterson and Francesca Foster had doubles for Groton/Mystic.

    • Milly Walker and Maddie Burrows combined to pitch a one-hitter as Waterford beat Ledyard 12-2 in five innings. Liliana Kramer had two hits and scored twice, Burrows tripled and scored twice and Walker singled and doubled for Waterford. Iyana Kirvan had the lone hit for Ledyard. 

    SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

    • Johnny Staubley pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts as Waterford Blue beat East Lyme Maroon 10-1 on Tuesday night. Frank Zawacki had three hits and Robert Parra and Jordan Hancock each singled and doubled for Waterford (2-0). Liam McCarthy had two hits for East Lyme (0-2).

    • Waterford Red scored twice in the top of the seventh inning and held on to beat East Lyme Black 4-3 on Tuesday night. Matt Driscoll singled, doubled and tripled and Derek Jones had three hits for Waterford (1-0). Brendan Liparulo and Sam Messick had two doubles each and Noah Wadsworth (triple) and Byran Carambot (double) had two hits each for East Lyme (1-1). 

    Black Wolves

    • Evan Kirk of the New England Black Wolves is one of three finalists for the National Lacrosse League Goaltender of the Year Award. Kirk led the league with 620 saves and ranked second in save percentage (.789) and wins (9). The winner will be announced on Sept. 27.

    Cattanach honored

    • New London's Lee Cattanach, who just completed his senior season on the Eastern Connecticut State University track & field team, was recognized as a CoSIDA Academic All-American. Cattanach, a Williams School graduate, had a 3.81 grade point average.

    College swimming

    • Nine swimmers from Connecticut College were named to the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America team. Sam Pierce, Emma Rotner, Valerie Urban, Shannon Cry, Charlotte Nixon and Olivia Haskell were named to the women's team and Mike Fothergill made the men's team. Fothergill's teammates Dylan Steiner and Stehpen Skaperdas received honorable mention.
