    Local colleges: Conn field hockey team stuns No. 5 Tufts 1-0

    New London — Jamie Navoni's goal with 58 seconds remaining lifted Connecticut College to a stunning 1-0 victory over No. 5 Tufts in a New England Small College Athletic Conference field hockey game on Saturday.

    It was the fourth goal of the season for Navoni and came when she broke free and tucked the ball past a charging Tufts goalie Emily Polinski.

    Ryley van der Velde made six saves in goal for the Camels (3-9, 2-6). Tufts is 9-2, 5-2.

    In other games:

    • Freshman Svea Boker had four assists as top-ranked UConn remained the only unbeaten team in Division I with a 7-2 win over Liberty in the Big East. Amanda Collins scored two goals for the Huskies (14-0, 5-0) while Charlotte Veitner added a goal and two assists.

    Men's soccer

    • Mitchell College outshot Becker 18-8 and came away with a 3-0 win in the New England Collegiate Conference. New London's Jose Roman III and former Wheeler standout TJ Condon had first-half goals, Andrew Storton scored in the second half and former Norwich Free Academy standout Seth Strader made three saves for Mitchell (2-8-2, 2-1-1).

    • Ryan Dandan scored in the 32nd minute for Coast Guard Academy as it played WPI to a 1-1 double overtime time in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. Jake Sorenson had three saves for Coast Guard (8-3-2, 2-2-1). Connor Hoeckele had four saves for the Engineers (7-2-4, 2-2-1).

    • Tufts scored in the fifth minute and held on to beat Conn College 1-0 in a NESCAC game. Mark Cameron made one save for Conn (8-4, 4-4).

    • Melvin Beckett's goal in the 22nd minute lifted South Florida to a 1-0 American Athletic Conference victory over UConn before 5,100 at Morrone Stadium in Storrs. The Bulls are 6-6. The Huskies (10-4) held an 8-3 edge in shots.

    Women's soccer

    • Sarah Pykkonen headed the ball past goalie Bryanna Montalvo in the 63rd minute to lift Tufts to a 1-0 victory over No. 18 Conn College in the NESCAC. Alessandra Sadler assisted on the play for the Jumbos (6-3-3, 4-2-1). Montalvo made nine saves for the Camels (9-2, 4-2).

    • Newbury scored all of its goals in the first half in a 4-0 win over Mitchell in the NECC. Shannon Walsh had three of the goals and Jordan Lohneiss made seven saves for Mitchell (1-11, 1-5).  

    Volleyball

    • Coast Guard picked up a pair of nonleague wins, beating Anna Maria 3-1 and Nichols 3-0. Angelou Dunton had 15 kills and 16 digs and Hailye Reynolds had 23 assists and 12 digs against Anna Maria and Makenna Martin had 39 assists in the two matches for Coast Guard (13-9). Kassidy Whitney had 11 assists against Nichols.

    • Mitchell dropped a pair of matches, losing to Wentworth and Newbury 3-0. Colby Zitoli had 19 digs, Janelle Rice had 11 assists and Lauren Tompkins had 10 assists for Mitchell (3-14).

    • Marina Ramos had 21 kills and four digs as Clark beat Conn College 25-17, 25-21, 13-25, 25-18. Rachel Webb had 46 assists for Clark (15-7). Katia Elisman had 21 assists for the Camels (10-8) and Ella Johnson and Sam Hunter each had nine kills.

    • Katia Elisman had 18 assists and seven digs as Conn College beat Trinity on Friday 25-16, 25-18, 25-17. Jenny Kellogg had 17 digs and eight kills for Conn and Dayna McCue added 20 saves.

    Football

    • Worcester Academy outscored St. Thomas More 21-0 in the second half to pull away for a 35-8 victory over the Chancellors. Quarterback Rodney Atkins passed for 113 yards and a touchdown for T-More while linebacker Ventine Richardson made 18 tackles.

    Men's cross country

    • Conn College finished third in its 20-team invitational at Harkness State Park, with Coast Guard finishing 13th. Claremont Mudd Scripps won with 79 points, Middlebury had 84 and Conn scored 105. Ben Bosworth led Conn with a sixth-place finish (24:57) and was followed by teammates Danny Aschale (eighth, 25:08), Connor Trapp (32nd, 25:47), Zander Mintz (37th, 25:52), Sean Soucy (52nd, 26:22) and Alejandro Hernandez (66th, 26:33). Coast Guard was paced by Zachary Velasquez (51st, 29:19), James Rimmele (60th, 27:04) and Timothy O'Loughlin (67th, 27:11).

    Women's cross country

    • Conn College finished ninth at its 22-team invitational, one spot ahead of Coast Guard. Ashley Curran led Conn with a fourth-place finish in 21:58 and teammate Bella Franz (10th, 22:11) joined her on the all-tournament team. Coast Guard, which beat five other NEWMAC rivals, was led by Rachel Burchill (60th, 23:35), Jennifer Haley (62nd, 23:39) and Anita Green (63rd, 23:41).

    Men's hockey

    • Freshman goaltender Adam Huska made 36 saves in his collegiate debut as UConn played RIT to a 1-1 overtime draw in Rochester, N.Y. The game was scoreless after two periods when Kasperi Ojantakanen gave the Huskies (2-0-2) a 1-0 lead when he redirected a shot by Derek Pratt into the net just 5:43 into the third period. RIT (1-1-1) then tied it when Chase Norrish blasted a shot past Huska from the right circle less than six minutes later. RIT held a 37-22 edge in shots.
