    Local colleges: No. 4 Quinnipiac men's hockey team beats UConn 5-2

    Hamden — Fourth-ranked Quinnipiac used second-period goals by Brogan Rafferty and Connor Clifton to pull away for a 5-2 men's hockey victory over UConn on Wednesday night.

    The Huskies (2-1-2) trailed 2-0 after one period and fought back to within 3-2 on goals by Spencer Naas (power play) and Karl El-Mir, but Rafferty scored just two minutes after El-Mir's goal to make it 4-2 and Clifton scored on a power play three minutes later to put the Bobcats in charge.

    Andrew Taverner, Craig Martin and Thomas Aldworth also scored goals for Quinnipiac (3-1-1), which held a 43-31 edge in shots. Freshman goalie Adam Huska made 38 saves for the Huskies.

    Women's soccer

    • Julia Pitino made 11 saves to break Trinity College's single-season shutout record (nine) as the Bantams handed Connecticut College its third straight loss, 2-0 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. Conn (9-4, 4-4) lost despite outshooting Trinity 16-4. Shannon Kennedy and Taylor Kirchgessner scored goals for the Bantams.

    • Cassidy Hopkins scored two goals as Lesley won its fourth straight match with a 5-0 victory over Mitchell College in the New England Collegiate Conference. Hopkins scored her two goals during a 58-second span in the first eight minutes for the Lynx (11-4-2, 6-1), Jordan Lohneiss made 16 saves in goal for Mitchell (1-12, 1-6).

    Field hockey

    • Sophie Pollinger's goal with 7:57 remaining in regulation lifted Conn College to a 1-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut. It was the third straight win for the Camels (4-9). Gabby Peterson assisted on the goal for Conn, which held a 16-2 edge in shots. ECSU is 6-8.

    Men's cross country

    • Conn College is ranked No. 31 in the Division III national poll. The Camels finished third in a strong field during their own invitational Saturday at Harkness Memorial State Park in Waterford. Conn also moved up to No. 6 in the New England rankings. This is the final season for coach Jim Butler, who is retiring after 30 years.
