    Local roundup: Kury, Indians are winners at wrestling invite

    Agawam, Mass. — Montville High School's Sam Kury defeated Granby Memorial's Cooper Fleming to win the 145-pound weight class Friday at the Phil Tomkiel Invitational wrestling tournament, helping lift the Indians to the team title.

    Fleming was last year's Class S 138-pound champion, pinning Kury in that match.

    Montville finished with 191 points to outlast Tri-County (Mass.), which had 172.

    Noah Caskey (126 pounds), Joel Morth (132) and Emanuel Diaz (182) also won their respective divisions for Montville. Tyler Velazquez (108), Jack Varley (112), Jayden Colon (119), Zach Navarrette (152) and Naquia Laracuente (160) each finished fourth.

    In other matches:

    • Ledyard finished second at the Trumbull Duals, losing to the hosts 47-20 in the final. Jake Millbach, Collin Crader and Dan Contino were each 5-0 for Ledyard (9-2). Ledyard beat New Fairfield (47-27), Trumbull B (72-6), Pomperaug (66-10) and Westhill (36-33) to advance to the final. 

    • Waterford went 2-2 at the Windham Duals, beating Rockville 48-15 and East Lyme 66-6 while losing to Guilford 53-21 and Fitch 34-33 on criteria. Eric Zane (113), A.J. Sachatello (120) and Luther Wade (145) each went 4-0 for the Lancers (6-5), Wade had three pins and Sachatello had two pins.

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Norwich Free Academy pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 60-38 win over E.O. Smith. NFA led 41-32 after three quarters. Hailey Conley had 27 points and five steals, Mackenzie Burke scored 15 and Sharon Bell had 11 rebounds for NFA (3-3).

    • Kate Hall had 19 points and four steals in Stonington's 68-52 loss to South Kingstown (R.I.) in the championship game of the Westerly Community Credit Union Holiday Tournament. Cam Dreher added 12 points and 15 rebounds and Miranda Arruda nine points and nine rebounds. The Bears are 5-2.

    • Savannah Marshall scored 29 points as Westbrook beat Old Lyme 56-29 in a Shoreline Conference game. Maddie Zrenda had eight points and Olivia Ellis scored seven for Old Lyme (4-2).

    • Emily Meigs had 17 points and Brianna Leone 11 for Montville in a 40-31 victory over Tourtellotte. Montville is 2-4.

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • Ledyard raced to a 28-18 lead after one quarter and held on to beat Northwest Catholic 78-76. Isiah McNair had 29 points, Steven Fletcher scored 24 and Trevor Hutchins had 11 points for Ledyard (4-1).

    • New London lost to Hartford Public 58-56. Major Roman had 17 points and 22 rebounds, Eduardo Gonzales scored 16 and Jalen Benson had 11 points for New London (1-3), which rallied from an 18-point deficit. 

    • Zach Cutler scored 22 points to lead Putnam to a 62-59 win over Wheeler. Roger Watrous and Michael Anderson had 19 points each for Wheeler (0-3).  

    • Westbrook led 46-25 at halftime and went on to beat Old Lyme 72-44 in a Shoreline Conference game. Dean Palenski led Old Lyme (1-3) with 14 points.

    • NFA fell to Hall 53-48. Jalen Graham and Aidan Miller had 12 points each and Tyler Sebastian scored 11 for NFA (3-1).

    H.S. hockey

    • Andrew Bannon broke a 1-1 tie when he scored with six minutes left in the second period to lift the Redhawks to a 2-1 win over the Eastern CT Eagles at Connecticut College. The Redhawks (3-2) tied the game early in the second period on a goal by Hunter Desaulnier. Ben Amor made 25 saves and Brayden LoVetere had an assist for the Redhawks. Troy Moeller made 28 saves for the Eagles (0-4). 

    Men's basketball

    • Connecticut College beat UMass Dartmouth 77-71 in the West Springfield/Naismith Classic. Conn (8-1) will play host Springfield in Saturday's final at 4:30 p.m. Zuri Pavlin had 19 points and seven rebounds, Daniel Janel had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Lee Messier and David Labossiere each scored 11 for Conn.

    • Coast Guard fell to host Roanoke at the Cregger Tournament 81-78. Freshman Max Lampe scored 21 points, Luke Daniels had 10 points and seven rebounds, Justin Kane scored 11 and Noah Baldez had seven rebounds for the Bears (3-6), who play Frostburg Sttae in the consolation at 11 a.m. Saturday.

    Men's hockey

    • Ryan Mowery scored three goals and had an assist as Connecticut College beat Franklin Pierce 8-2 in the Codfish Bowl consolation game. Joe Giordano, Ryan Petti, Jacob Moreau, Jake Farabee and Jeff Thompson had goals, Avery Gobbo made 18 saves and Brian Belisle had two assists for Conn (2-7-1).

    • UConn advanced to the Desert Classic final with a 4-3 win over No. 18 St. Cloud State. Spencer Naas scored twice and Rob Nichols made 33 saves for UConn (7-6-1), which plays the Arizona State-Brown winner on Saturday.
