    Local roundup: Sun to host WNBA preseason doubleheader May 2-3

    Mohegan — The Connectcut Sun will host a two-day WNBA preseason doubleheader May 2-3 at Mohegan Sun Arena, the team announced Wednesday.

    The Sun will welcome the defending champion Los Angeles Sparks, New York Liberty and Chicago Sky for the exhibition event.

    On Tuesday, May 2, the Liberty will play the Sparks at 5 p.m. followed by the Sun and Sky at 7. The following day, New York and Chicago play at 5 p.m. followed by the Sun and Sparks at 7.

    Connecticut will play its third and final preseason game on Sunday, May 7, at 3 p.m. at the Liberty.

    "We are excited about our 2017 preseason schedule, including our continued commitment to hosting an annual four-team event at Mohegan Sun Arena that has become a popular tradition with our fans," Sun coach and general manager Curt Miller said in a statement released by the team. "The event will feature three outstanding teams, including the defending WNBA champions."

    Men's basketball

    • Avery Point's season came to an end with a 57-53 loss to Massasoit CC in a Region 21 playoff game. Will Orr led the Pointers with 16 points and Mack Osias added 12.

    Men's lacrosse

    • East Lyme's Mac Brodaski had seven goals and three assists as Mitchell College beat Albertus Magnus 16-12 in a nonleague game. Jacob Setzko had three goals and two assists and Montville's Kyle Marsh and East Lyme's Jackson Brockwell had two goals and two assists each for Mitchell (1-1).

    • Anthony Wyler and Jack Pope scored five goals each as Coast Guard Academy beat Eastern Connecticut State 18-5 in a nonleague game. T.J. Varley, Riley McNulty and Benner Geurtsen had two goals each and Ryan Gochar and McNulty had two assists each for Coast Guard (2-0). 

    College honors

    • Conn College senior guard Liz Malman and junior forward Mairead Hynes were named to the All-New England Small College Athletic Conference second team in women's basketball. Hynes, the 2015 NESCAC Rookie of the Year, averaged 13.8 points while shooting 58 percent from the floor. Malman averaged 11.6 points per game and leaves with 1,175 career points, ninth all-time at Conn.
