    Local roundup: Thomas' buzzer-beater lifts NFA boys past Fairfield Warde

    Norwich — Seth Thomas made a 30-foot shot at the buzzer to give the seventh-seeded Norwich Free Academy boys' basketball team a wild 56-53 win over No. 10 Fairfield Warde on Wednesday in a CIAC Class LL second-round game.

    Thomas scored 17 of his 24 points in the second half for the Wildcats (18-5), who will play defending champion Hillhouse in Friday night’s quarterfinals at the Floyd Little Athletic Center. The second-seeded and Southern Connecticut Conference champion, Hillhouse routed No. 18 Shelton 82-60.

    Warde’s J.J. Conway made a three-point play to tie the game at 53 with a minute left. It got the ball back with 41 seconds left after an NFA miss, but turned it over with four seconds remaining.

    Alec Gomes inbounded the ball to Thomas for the game-winner.

    Tyler Sebastian had 18 points and 11 rebounds for NFA.

    Marcel Parsons had 18 points for the Mustangs (16-7) and Sean Conway scored 16.

    • New London's Class L second-round boys' basketball game against Middletown has been moved from Thursday to Friday in order to avoid a scheduling conflict with both schools' girls’ basketball teams.

    The Whalers will play at Middletown at 6 p.m. The Blue Dragons were runners-up last season.

    The New London girls play host to defending Class LL champion Stamford in Thursday's quarterfinals at 7 p.m.

    Thursday’s other tournament games involving local teams are:

    • Bunnell at Ledyard, Class L boys’ basketball, second round, 7 p.m.

    • Waterford at Suffield, Class M girls' basketball quarterfinal, 7 p.m.

    • NFA at Trumbull, Class LL girls’ basketball quarterfinal, 6 p.m.

    • NFA Redhawks vs. Wethersfield-Middletown-Rocky Hill-Portland at Northford, Division III hockey quarterfinal, 7 p.m.

    H.S. swimming

    • East Lyme's Ben Prouty was fourth in the Class M diving championship at Bulkeley High School. Prouty, the Eastern Connecticut Conference champion, amassed 348.45 points.

    Men's lacrosse

    • P.J. Kelleher set the school's single-game record for points (13) and had eight goals to tie the single-game record as Conn College downed MIT 25-12.

    Kelleher bested the 12 points scored by Matt Shea in 1993. His eight goals ties the mark set by both Parker Sides (1998) and Steve Dachille (2010).

    Tucker Mscisz had three goals for Conn (1-1) and Alex Calabro had two goals and an assist. Also, Maxx Trotsky had two goals and an assist.

    • Anthony Wyler and Jack Pope had two goals each in Coast Guard's 14-5 loss to Washington College in Chestertown, Md. Pope leads Coast Guard (2-2) with nine goals and Wyler is second with eight. Matt Huemme added a goal and an assist and Benner Guertsen had two assists. Washington led 6-4 at halftime.

    College softball

    • Coast Guard Academy's Claire Hurley of Waterford was 3-for-3 with a double, three RBI and scored the game-winning run in the sixth inning of a 7-6 victory over Juniata, the first game of the Bears' doubleheader sweep at the PFX Games in Clermont, Fla.

    Coast Guard (5-1) came back from a six-run deficit against Juniata, scoring seven unanswered runs. Emma Hvozdovich was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Courtney McKenna 1-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.

    In the second game, Coast Guard blanked Penn State New Kensington 17-0 in five innings, with sophomore pitcher Mackenzie Everett (2-0) allowing just one hit. Kayla Sowers was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored and McKenna was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.

    College baseball

    • Justin Rebholz pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief to earn the save, getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh, as Coast Guard won its fourth straight with an 8-5 victory over Anna Maria at the Gene Cusic Classic.

    Dan Finn (1-0) pitched six solid innings and allowed just five singles, three runs (one earned), while walking two and striking out seven to get the win. The Bears led 6-3 before Anna Maria scored a pair of runs to cut the deficit to 6-5 in the seventh.

    Coast Guard (4-4) would get two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh. Timbo Duncan led off with a double before Brendan McNeil's RBI single accounted for the first run. Alex Murdoch drove in McNeil with an RBI groundout to push the lead to 8-5.

    Duncan had a double, triple and three RBI, while Luke Thompson had a pair of hits for the Bears.

    Women’s basketball honors

    • New London graduate Charee Osborne of Roxbury Community College and Stonington’s Taty LaFrance Boyce of UConn Avery Point, both freshmen, were among Region 21 first team honorees, as selected by the league coaches and committee members.

    Osborne averaged 15.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game for Roxbury, which went 13-0 in the region to extend its winning streak against Region 21 opponents to 47 in a row. The Tigers won their fifth region title in the last six seasons and will compete in the NJCAA Division III nationals March 16-18 in Utica, N.Y., as the No. 3 seed.

    LaFrance Boyce averaged 29.7 points per game, second in the nation, and led the country in steals per game with 5.5. Avery Point’s Taleeha Green (16 points, 14.3 rebounds per game) also was named to the first team and teammate Meagan Bianchi to the second team.

    Men’s basketball honors

    • UConn Avery Point’s Will Orr, the Pointers’ leading scorer with 18.5 points per game, earned Region 21 first team honors. Orr also averaged 6.8 rebounds per game. Teammate Tyrell Martinez, a New London High School graduate, was named to the third team.
