Black Wolves play at Calgary on Saturday night

The main goal for the New England Black Wolves in Saturday night's game at the Calgary Roughnecks: turn a three-game winning streak into four.

The game will also provide a highlight, however, for Wolves assistant coach Tracey Kelusky, who will be named “Forever a Roughneck” in a pregame ceremony. Kelusky, inducted into the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame in September, won championships with Calgary in 2004 and 2009.

The matchup between the Black Wolves (6-6) and the Roughnecks (4-8) is scheduled for 9 p.m. at Scotiabank Centre.

New England started the season 0-3 before finally battling back to the .500 mark, unbeaten thus far in the second half of the season in trying to reprise last year's playoff appearance.

“I think we've revisited some of our principles,” Black Wolves coach Glenn Clark said during his weekly conference call, addressing the turnaround. “I think we were a little flat-footed on D. We weren't as aggressive as we needed to be. We sort of revisited that and wanted to get back to some of the things that we do that create energy and activity from our defensive end.

“… We're not celebrating anything. I think we were disappointed with where we were. We're happy that we were able to dig ourselves out of the hole, but we certainly don't feel like we've accomplished anything.”

New England is coming off a 12-11 home victory over the Rochester Knighthawks last Friday night, while Calgary lost that same night at Georgia 17-8.

Calgary was scheduled to play at Saskatchewan late Friday night prior to Saturday's matchup with the Black Wolves. The Roughnecks were 3-1 to start the season before losing seven of their last eight games.

New England is led by Shawn Evans (25 goals, 45 assists, 70 points), who will play his first game at Calgary since being traded to the Black Wolves prior to last season. Also, Kevin Crowley has 30 goals and 28 assists for 58 points, having scored in every game this season, and goalie Evan Kirk leads the league in saves (479).

Curtis Dickson leads Calgary with 36 goals and 32 assists for 68 points. He had three goals and two assists in the loss to the Swarm.

“They're a good team and it's going to be quite a challenge going into their building,” Clark said of the Roughnecks. “… I think they're a pretty deep and well-rounded team. You get tricked by these teams' records at times.”
