    Local roundup: UConn completes three-game sweep of Memphis

    Storrs — Freshman Mason Feole pitched eight dominant innings as UConn completed a three-game sweep of Memphis with a 4-0 victory over the Tigers in an American Athletic Conference baseball game at J.O. Christian Field on Sunday.

    The lefty (5-0)  allowed just four hits and retired the final five batters he faced as the Huskies (19-10, 6-0) completed their second straight AAC sweep (they swept East Carolina last weekend). Ryan Radue pitched a 1-2-3 nine to complete the shutout.

    Another freshman, Jack Lambrecht of Westerly, drove in a pair of runs for UConn, including one on a two-out RBI triple in the sixth. Conor Moriarty gave the Huskies some breathing room in the eighth with a two-run single to center.

    In other games:

    • Sophomore Will Stephens went 6-for-8 while pitchers Ben Webster and Walter Harris had solid outings, leading Coast Guard Academy to a doubleheader sweep of Emerson, 12-3 and 5-1, in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference. The Bears improve to 11-13 overall, 3-6 in the conference.

    In game one, Webster (1-1) went six strong innings and allowed six hits, three earned runs and struck out six to earn his first collegiate win. Freshman Alex Cordes pitched the final three innings and collected his first career save. Stephens was 3 for 4 with two RBI while junior Zach Serna had two hits and three RBI and senior Timbo Duncan had two hits and drove in two runs.

    Harris (2-3) pitched the first complete game of his career in game two, allowing eight hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out seven. Stephens had three hits and Cordes added two.

    • Avery Point split with the nation's second-ranked NJCAA Division III team, losing the opener to Brookdale CC (N.J.) 12-11 before pulling out a 6-3 win in the second game behind the complete effort of East Lyme's C.J. Leindecker (4-0). The second game was tied 3-3 in the sixth when the Pointers (12-9) scored three runs with two outs as Tyler Shuler doubled, Malcolm Alleyne walked, Mike DeRosa tripled home two runs and Cooper Robinson followed with an RBI single.

    Leindecker allowed only one earned run while walking three and striking out six while Robinson had two hits, two runs and an RBI. In the opener, Robinson had three hits, three runs and one RBI while Mike Corso drove in three and Mike Chiovitti and Vinny Pallisco each had two RBI. Brookdale CC is 24-4.

    H.S. girls' basketball

    • Norwich Free Academy's Hailey Conley scored 21 points and earned MVP honors and New London's India Pagan scored the game-winning basket with 30 seconds remaining for the East team in a 108-106 victory over the West in the 56th JCC Schoolgirl Classic all-star basketball game in Bridgeport. Pagan added a blocked shot with 19 seconds remaining to help preserve the victory. Other local players representing the East were New London's Jada Lucas and NFA's Mackenzie Burke. The team was coached by New London's Holly Misto.

    Men's tennis

    • Tom Hackett won his No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-3 while Mike Melampy and John Hu won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles for Coast Guard in an 7-2 loss to Brandeis in Waltham, Mass. Ben Errington came the close at No. 6 singles, dropping a 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 decision.

    Women's water polo

    • Connecticut College took three out of its five Division III Conference matches at Washington & Jefferson College. The Camels (7-13) earned a split on Friday, dropping a 12-4 decision to Carthage before beating Grove City College 13-8. They then defeated Penn State-Behrend 6-4, beat Monmouth 10-7 and lost to Washington & Jefferson, 12-4.
