    Local college roundup: Prettitore powers Mitchell to victory

    New London — Senior Francis Prettitore belted two home runs and drove in three runs, powering Mitchell College past Nichols College, 6-4, Wednesday in non-conference baseball game.

    The Mariners jumped out to a 6-0 lead behind Prettitore's solo home runs in the third and fifth innings. Freshman Brody Adams, an Norwich Free Academy graduate, added his first homer of the season, a two-run shot.

    Prettitore finished with three hits and added three RBI to increase his team-leading total to 40. Reliever Brian Ricker earned the win for the Mariners (19-10), who had dropped four of their last five games. Junior Eddie Santiago of New London picked up his second save.

    In other games:

    • Avery Point beat Bunker Hill 15-3 on a mercy rule for its eighth straight win as Mike Chiovitti drove in three runs. Mike Savino had three hits and drove in two runs, Mystic's Cooper Robinson had two hits and scored twice and Tim Smith scored twice and drove in two runs for the Pointers (19-9). Trevor Bolduc of Mystic (1-0) earned the victory. 

    Men's lacrosse

    • Anthony Wyler scored the go-ahead goal with one minute, 22 seconds left in the game to give Coast Guard a 9-8 win over Springfield in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game. Jack Pope scored three times for Coast Guard (8-6, 2-2) and Riley McNulty had two goals and an assist. Also, Trey Johnson had 14 saves and Wyler two assists.

    • Maxx Trotsky had six goals and an assist as Connecticut College overwhelmed Regis, 16-3. Kevin Schirmacher and Timothy Seibel each had a goal and two assists for Conn (7-6) and Jon Creed and Ted Kasper both scored twice.

    Women's lacrosse

    • Freshman Abigail Bradford scored her 21st goal of the season in Coast Guard Academy's 14-1 loss to Babson in the NEWMAC. The Bears fell to 3-12, 0-7.

    Men's tennis

    • Babson outlasted Coast Guard Academy, 5-4, in a marathon NEWMAC match which was moved indoors in the middle of the match. Mike Melampy won in straight sets at No. 4 singles while John Hu and Adam Bahney both needed three sets to win their singles matches for the Bears (5-6, 2-2).
