    Local roundup: Adam Rainaud qualifies for PGA Championship

    Sunriver, Ore. — Adam Rainaud, the former assistant professional at Black Hall Club in Old Lyme, qualified for the 99th PGA Championship on Wednesday night.

    Rainaud completed play in the 50th PGA Club Professionals Championship at Sunriver Resort by tying for fifth in the 72-hole event. The top 20 club pros earned an exemption into this year's PGA Championship from Aug. 10-13 at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, N.C.

    Rainaud, who qualified for the club pro event by winning his third straight Connecticut PGA Professional Championship in 2016, finished at 1-over 286 with rounds of 73, 71, 69 and 73. He left following the 2016 to become an assistant pro at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., which will host the 2020 U.S. Open.

    In other local golf news:

    • Chris DeLucia of Norwich Golf Course lost in the quarterfinals of the 115th Connecticut Amateur Championship at Tashua Knolls Golf Course in Trumbull. DeLucia was beaten by Blake Kelley of Manchester Country Club 1 up. DeLucia never led in the match and was 3 down when he won the 15th and 16th holes to close the gap, but Kelley was able to close out the match by halving the final two holes.

    Schooners win

    • The Mystic Schooners beat the Sanford Mainers 7-6 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game. Ryan Ramiz (Seton Hall) singled home John Trousdale (Alabama) in the top of the seventh inning to snap a 6-6 tie. Trousdale was 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, Ryan Solomon (Northeastern) had two hits and Cam Johnson (Davidson) scored twice for the Schooners (5-5).

    Tigers blanked

    • The Connecticut Tigers were held to three singles in a 3-0 loss to the Aberdeen IronBirds in a New York-Penn League game. The Tigers (2-1) made four errors, making all of Aberdeen's runs unearned. 

    American Legion Zone 6

    • Tyler Yeomans was 3-for-3 with a home run as unbeaten Waterford beat Norwich 10-0 in five innings on a mercy rule. Matt Driscoll, Mike Rocchetti and Kevin Johnson had two hits each for Waterford (9-0) and Yeomans and Driscoll drove in three runs each. Jared Burrows was the winner, allowing two hits eith five strikeouts and one walk. Norwich is 0-9. 

    SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

    • East Lyme White beat Waterford Red 6-4 in the opener for both teams. East Lyme starter Peter Tauro struck out nine over the first four innings. Jackson Deweese tripled and drove in a run and Matt Bauman had a run-scoring single for East Lyme.

    • Three pitchers combined for the shutout as Waterford Blue beat East Lyme Black 3-0 in the opener for both teams. Jordan Hancock pitched four hitless innings and teamed up with Tyler Howser and Johnny Staubley for the shutout. Jake Huff doubled and Howser had two hits for Waterford.

    District 10 softball (11-12)

    • Waterford finished pool play unbeaten with an 18-2 win over Groton/Mystic on Wednesday night. Anna Dziecinny was the winning pitcher and Lily Marelli, Maddie Burrows and Anna Donahue had two hits each for Waterford, which will be the No. 1 seed in Saturday's semifinals. Arianna Tompkins and Maddy Southers had hits for Groton/Mystic.

    • Lyme/Old Lyme advanced to Saturday's semifinals with a 3-2 win over Pawcatuck on Wednesday. Julia Johnston pitched a complete game for the win and Lauren Pflugbeil and Johnston each drove in runs. Adriana Rodriguez drove in two runs for Pawcatuck.
