    Local roundup: Coast Guard men blank Mitchell 2-0

    New London — Brock Hassett and Ryan Dandan scored in a five-minute span as the Coast Guard Academy men’s soccer blanked Mitchell College 2-0 on Wednesday night.

    The Bears (5-2-1) didn’t allow Mitchell to take a shot on goal in remaining unbeaten at home this season.

    Patrick Palermo-Re passed to Hassett for a goal in the 52nd minute. Alex Hall set up Danden for his goal in the 57th minute.

    Ex-Norwich Free Academy goalie Seth Strader had eight saves for the Mariners (1-5-1).

    Women's soccer

    • SUNY Old Westbury rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat Mitchell 2-1 in a nonconference game. Lindsey Fairbank scored her first collegiate goal in the first half for the Mariners (1-5) and goalie Jordan Lohneiss made nine saves.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Kayley Ericson had 18 assists and Eliana Jewell added eight digs and seven kills as NFA swept Ledyard 25-15, 25-16, 25-15 in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division I match. Bailey Guillemette had six kills and four digs for NFA (2-5, 2-2). Miranda Chesnut had five kills for the Colonels (5-4, 1-3).

    • Gretchen Dusza had 24 assists as Waterford downed Bacon Academy 25-21, 25-18, 26-24 in an ECC Division II match. Molly Kosma had 10 digs for Waterford (6-2, 1-2) and Sydney Tabor added eight kills.

    • Plainfield rallied for a 3-2 victory over Wheeler in an ECC Division III match. Game scores were 18-25, 18-25, 25-13, 25-20 and 15-5. Jessica Neddeau had five aces, three kills and five digs for the Lions (3-5, 1-2) while Sarah Spracklin added two aces, eight kills and six digs.

    • Jessica Paholski had nine kills and seven aces as Valley Regional beat Old Lyme 25-20, 25-14, 25-11 in the Shoreline Conference. Maddy Just had six kills and six aces for Valley. Una Barrett had three assists and Caroline Sirna had two kills and an ace for the Wildcats.

    • Windham Tech defeated Grasso Tech 25-12, 25-10 and 25-19 in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Natashia Cruz had 11 service points, two digs and two aces for the Eagles whle Anansia Gordon added 12 digs and Hailey Beal had 11 digs and five kills.

    H.S. cross country

    • Williams finished third at the Marianapolis Prep Invite in Thompson. The Blues had 143 points and were led by Will Jarrett, who placed 11th in 18:43. Also finishing in the top 25 were Colin Madaus (14th, 18:57) and Hartmut Doerwaldt (24th, 20:18). In the girls' race, Grace Cassineri was the top finisher for Williams in 34th place (26:27.). The Blues did not figure in the girls' team scoring.
