    Local roundup: Waterford wrestling opens on a high note with win over Bacon Academy

    Waterford — Waterford High School rode six pins to a season-opening 54-24 win over Bacon Academy on Wednesday night in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II wrestling match.

    Logan Smith (106 pounds), Donnie Mellon (145), Luther Wade (160), Jake Gannotti (170), Noah Weaver (182) and Dylan Zito (285) had pins for the Lancers and teammates Eric Zane (120) and Tyler Radack (126) also won their matches and the team added a pair of wins by forfeit.

    In other matches:

    • Four pins led Fitch to a 38-27 win over St. Bernard/Norwich Tech. Zach Letellier (170), Dakota Grover (285), Brandon Hamilton (195) and Austin Robertson (145) had the pins and teammates Aiden Robertson (113) and Jarod Kosman (126) also won their matches. Anthony Pomerleau (120) and Jeremy Foular (138) had pins for the Saints while teammates Josh Brown and Chris Gill also won their matches.  

    • New London fell in its opener, losing to Windham 44-27. Luis Rodriguez-Veras (170), Xavier Alvarez (182), Jacob Commander (195) and Noah Kimball (220) had pins for the Whalers and freshman teammate Max Commander won at 132.

    • NFA lost to Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech, 54-25. Savannah Vanase (106), Dominic Renfree (120) and Theran Vanase (160) had pins for NFA and teammates Brandon Nieto (138) and Eddy Cepeda (220) also won their matches.

    Men's basketball

    • D.J. Mitchell scored 20 points as St. Thomas More beat New Hampton 86-72. Adrien Nunez had 18 points and seven rebounds, K.K. Curry had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists and Everrette Hammond had 10 points, six rebounds and five assists for T-More (6-4).

    H.S. boys' basketball

    • Williams School lost to Forman, 65-63. Zain Alan had 18 points, Nick Bonner scored 15 and Grayson Guinan scored 13 for Williams.

    • Winchendon beat St. Thomas More 77-64. Tyler Rudolph had 15 points and seven rebounds and Jalen Duck had nine points and six rebounds for T-More.
