    Local colleges: Conn women advance to NESCAC hockey semis

    New London — Samantha Estes scored three goals as second-seeded Connecticut College rolled to a 5-3 victory over No. 7 Williams College in the quarterfinals of the New England Small College Athletic Conference women's hockey tournament on Saturday at Dayton Arena.

    The Camels will play No. 5 Amherst, a 2-0 winner over No. 4 Trinity, in next Saturday's semifinals at Middlebury College at 4 p.m. Middlebury, the top-seed, will host the two day event and play No. 6 Bowdoin at 1 p.m. in the other semifinal.

    Conn (15-7-3) tied the program's single-season record for wins and will be playing in the NESCAC Final Four for the fourth time in five seasons.

    Steph Izzi and Julie Beattie each added a goal and an assist for the Camels, Kate Kohn had two assists and goalie Katherine Chester made 28 saves. Conn broke the game open in the second period by scoring four power play goals in a span of 12 minutes, 54 seconds.

    Men's basketball

    • St. Thomas More closed out its regular season with a 64-54 win over Navy Prep. Tyrei Randall had 20 points, Maceo Jack scored 14 and Troy Sav had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Chancellors (24-10), who host New Hampton in a NEPSAC Class A tournament game on Wednesday at 4 p.m. 

    Indoor track

    • Conn College's Bella Franz matched her second-place finish from a year ago in the mile run at the All-New England Championship in Boston. Franz, a senior, broke her own school record with a time of 4:54.55. Teammate Shannon Kennedy topped her school record in the pentathlon with 2,955 points.

    Wrestling

    • Coast Guard Academy placed three in the semifinals at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional at Bristol, R.I. Chris Sullivan (157 pounds), Nick Remke (165) and Mike Palomba (174) will wrestle in the semis Sunday while teammates Matt McAllister (141) and Phil Azzari (197) will wrestle in the consolation bracket. The top three in each class with advance to the nationals on March 10-11 at Lacrosse, Wisc. 

    Baseball

    • Mitchell College scored twice in the top of the 10th inning and beat Methodist 7-5. Garet Griffin stole home for the first run and Markus Melendez later scored on an error. Mystic's Tristan Hurley, Peter Abate and Melendez had two hits each and Steven Gonzalez drove in two runs for Mitchell (1-1).

    • Avery Point split a season-opening doubleheader at Mercer Community College (N.J.), winning the opener 9-8 before dropping the second game 16-4. In the opener, East Lyme's C.J. Leindecker pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn the save for New London's Josh Vincent while Mike Corso led the offense with two hits, three RBI and two runs while East Lyme's Mike Morgan, Fitch's Cooper Robinson, Vinny Pallisco and Ryan Bagdasarian each added two hits. Mike Chiovitti hit a two-run homer in the second game for the Pionters while Pallisco had three hits, including a solo homer, and Mike DeRosa added two hits and an RBI. Mercer is 3-1.

    • Will Montgomerie pitched UConn to a 2-1 win over Texas. Montgomerie (2-0) allowed four hits over 6.1 innings with a career-high 13 strikeouts. Isaac Feldstein's two-run double in the sixth inning gave UConn (4-2) a 2-0 lead. Former Avery Point standout John Russell pitched the final 2.1 innings for his second save. 

    Women's lacrosse

    • East Lyme's Paige Schneider scored four goals as Eastern Connecticut State beat Coast Guard 14-3 in the season opener for both teams. Former Fitch standout Michelina Pinto had three goals and an assist for ECSU. Lydia VanWinkle, Cecelia Hosley and Niki Kirchner-Hope scored and Anne McGoldrick had an assist for Coast Guard.

    Men's lacrosse

    • Freshman Riley McNulty had three goals and three assists as Coast Guard beat Lasell 12-5 in the season opener for both teams. Benner Geurtsen had three goals and an assist and Blaise Curtis scored twice for the Bears. 

    • Farmingdale State led 10-0 after one quarter and went on to beat Mitchell College 23-2 in the season opener for both teams. East Lyme's Mac Brodaski scored both goals for Mitchell and Niantic's Jackson Brockwell had an assist.
