New Haven — John Marcolina, a member of the Fitch/Stonington/Ledyard/Norwich Tech cooperative program, earned all-state honors with a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle during Saturday's State Open swimming championship meet at Yale University.

Marcolina, a junior from Fitch, finished in 21.12 seconds, placing behind two seniors, Fairfield Prep's Oliver Rus (20.53) and Amity's Colin Roy (20.93).

Marcolina also competed in two other State Open events for the Falcons, finishing ninth in the 100 freestyle (47.70) and joining senior Patrick Nowak (Stonington), junior Joe Vignato (Fitch) and junior Keegan Reck (Stonington) to place 10th in the 200 freestyle relay (1:30.77).

In addition, Nowak placed 20th in the 100 breastroke (1:01.43).

Greenwich won the team title with 487.5 points and the meet was highlighted by Ridgefield seniors Kieran Smith, who broke his own state and State Open records in the 200 freestyle (1:34.89) and 500 freestyle (4:18.83).

Baseball

• Mason Feole pitched six shutout innings with a career-high eight strikeouts as UConn beat St. John's 1-0. Jacob Wallace and P.J. Poulin allowed one baserunner over the final three innings, with Poulin striking out two in the ninth for his fourth save. North Stonington's Troy Stefanski scored the game's only run, coming home in the top of the sixth when teammate John Toppa got caught in a rundown.

• Avery Point swept a doubleheader from host Cecil in Maryland, winning the opener 13-10 in eight innings and the second game 13-3. Former NFA standout Andy Grant pitched a two-hitter in the second game and Mike Chiovitti and Mike Savino homered for the Pointers (3-1-1). 

Women's lacrosse

• Kara Wollmers scored the game-winning goal with 24.7 seconds remaining as Williams outlasted Connecticut College 11-10 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference battle that featured 10 ties and three lead changes. The Camels (2-3, 0-2) had tied the match at 10 on a goal by Julia Loesch with 1:40 remaining. Jamie Navoni led Conn with five goals, one assits and four draws while Loesch added the second hat trick of her career and goalie Megan Mullin made 11 saves. Willis is 1-3, 1-2.

Men's lacrosse

• No. 20 Conn College suffered its first loss, falling to Williams 11-9 in the NESCAC. Jordan Foster had four goals, Anthony Drouin had three groundballs and caused two turnovers and Ben Parens won 14 of 24 faceoffs for Conn (4-1, 2-1).

Road racing

• Geralson Withrow of Mystic won the Mystic Irish 5K, finishing in a time of 17:28. Laura Brustolon of Littleton, Mass., a Stonington High School graduate, was the top women's finisher — coming in third at 18:55. Stanley Mickus of Mystic was second (18:48) and rounding out the top 10 were Jake McCarthy of Groton (18:58), Nick Avello of Westport (19:03), Matt Speight of Central Village (19:15), Thomas Forde of Mystic (19:17), Tad Spencer of Mystic (19:21), Andrew Kerst of Mystic (19:21) and Carson Riley of Mystic (19:22).
