    Local colleges: CGA sweeps Smith in to open NEWMAC softball season

    New London — Coast Guard Academy opened its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference softball season by sweeping a doubleheader from Smith College on Saturday, 6-4 and 14-2 in five innings.

    Senior Emma Hvozdovich continued her hot start, hitting her second home run of the spring, scoring three runs and drive in two during the two games for the Bears (9-1, 2-0), giving her 15 RBI in only 10 games.

    Audrey Bartz added a home run, her first of the season, while Kayla Sowers went 4-for-6 and scored four runs and freshman Charlee Kraiss scored four runs, drove in two and stole three bases, giving her 10 on the season.

    Julia Ferris (5-1) was the winning pitcher in the opener while Sydney Arendt earned the saves in the opener and came back to get the win in the second game to improve to 4-0.

    Smith is 2-10, 0-2.

    In other games:

    • Suzanne Vachon went a combined 6-for-6 with six runs scored and six RBIs as Mitchell College swept Lyndon State in a pair of five-inning games, 25-1 and 10-2, to earn its first two victories of the season. Stephanie Adams also went 6-for-6 over the two games and scored four runs with RBIs for the Mariners (2-6). In the first game, Danielle Autieri had two hits, three runs scored and four RBIs, and Taylor Duscheneau contributed three hits, four runs scored and four RBIs.

    Baseball

    • Michael Savino had a pair of hits in each game as UConn Avery Point swept a road doubleheader at Westchester Community College, 8-5 and 6-2. Alex Petchark added two hits in the opener for the Pointers while Mike Rocchetti drove in three runs.

    • Mitchell won its NECC opener with a 16-2 victory over Southern Vermont in New London. The teams will play doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m., also at Mitchell. Kyle Hartenstein, James Rangel, Steven Pagan and Jason West had three hits apiece for the Mariners (9-1, 1-0), who finished with 20 overall, and Garet Griffin drove in four runs. Starting Bryton Ferris (3-0) scattered five hits over seven innings without allowing an earned run.

    • Junior Luke Thompson kept up his torrid pace at the plate, but Coast Guard was swept by Wheaton 13-5 and 9-3 in a NEWMAC doubleheader. Thompson went 6 for 9 in the two games for CGA (5-4, 0-2), and is 16 for 22 in his last five games to raise his batting average to .514, tops in the conference. Jeremy Lhotka had a three-run double in the opener for the Bears.

    Swimming

    • Coast Guard freshman Eric Fuhs earned All-America honors in  the 200 breaststroke as he finished eighth (2:02.34) on the final day of the NCAA Division III Championships in Indianapolis. Also for the Bears, Taylor Rowe earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 1,650 freestyle by placing 16th (16:02.19), Joe Rodriguez placed 18th in the 100 freestyle (45.15) and the 400 freestyle relay of Patrick Jackson, Chasse Sodemann, Ross Garrett and Rodriguez placed 21st (3:07.35).

    Conn College's 400 freestyle relay team of Kaison Ifill, George Tilneac, Drake Freiberg and Charlie Adl earned All-America honorable honors by placing 16th (3:04.41). Earlier in the day, Freiberg was 19th in the 200 breaststroke (46.19) and Ifill was 40th in the 100 free (46.19).

    On the women's side, Coast Guard's 400 freestyle relay of Sarah Passilla, Kristen Young, Emily Benson and Christine McCulla placed 25th (3:31.61), and Benson was 22nd in the 1,650 freestyle (17:16.20).

    Men's lacrosse

    • Ben Parens won 19 faceoffs and scored off two of them, including the game-winner, as No. 20 Connecticut College outlasted Colby College 11-10 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference. P.J. Kelleher led the Camels (6-1, 3-1) with two goals and four assists while goalie Jameson Hill made five saves.

    Women's lacrosse

    • Coast Guard earned its first NEWMAC win in program history with a 21-15 win over Smith. Freshman Brenna Farrington scored nine goals for the Bears (6-1, 1-0), a single-game school record, and now has a single-season record 37 goals, breaking the old mark of 29 set by Niki Kruger in 2015. Senior Daria McKenna added three goals and three assists while Marietta Davis scored four goals and Haley Howard added two goals and two assists.

    • Gillian MacLellan faced 32 shots and had 13 saves in Mitchell College's 19-0 loss to N.Y. Maritime. Kate McCormack led the Mariners (0-2) with three shots on goal.

    Track & field

    • Conn College had three individual winners at the Wesleyan Invitational in Middletown, which was moved indoors due to weather conditions. Alicia Palmer won the 400-meter race (1:01.29), Leila Alfaro captured the 60 hurdles (9.97) and Koko Mensah won the shot put (42 feet, 4.75 inches). In addition, Palmer was third in the 200 (27.06), Emily Senatore was third in the weight throw (41-9.25), and Sarah Clark was fourth in the 200 (27.25) and 400 (1:02.75).

    For the Conn men, Christian Whitaker was third in the 200 (23.82), Mike D'Onofrio was third in the weight throw (41-8.75) and Austin DiMartino placed fourth in the high jump (5-8).
