Steward may face opposition in Waterford first selectman's race

Waterford - Republican First Selectman Daniel Steward said he intends to run for re-election in November. He plans to formally announce his candidacy at Filomena's Restaurant on Sunday.

The coming election is the first since 2007 in which Steward is expected to be challenged by a Democrat. He was challenged by Democrat Bruce A. Kruszewski in 2007 and independent candidate Kevin Ziolkovski in 2011. Steward was elected as first selectman in 2005, replacing outgoing First Selectman Paul B. Eccard. In that election, he also faced Kruszewski.

The registrars of voters are budgeting for a larger number of ballots than they originally anticipated after Democratic Town Committee Chairman John "Bill" Sheehan told them to plan for a contested election, Democratic Registrar Diana Cramer said Wednesday.

Cramer said the registrars at first planned on printing ballots to accommodate 35 percent of the roughly 12,500 registered voters in Waterford, but raised the quantity to accommodate 50 percent at Sheehan's recommendation.

Sheehan said the committee knows of someone interested in running. He said the announcement may come as early as Tuesday.
