Arts, disabilities advocate to run for Norwich City Council

Norwich – Democratic Town Committee member Elanah Sherman announced she will seek the party nomination to run for City Council this fall.

Sherman, a 10-year Norwich resident, works as an advocate at the state Office of Protection and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities, in Hartford. Locally, she has been active in seeking equal access for people with disabilities and in local arts and cultural programs.

“My work in promoting the civil rights of people with disabilities, as well as my long-time involvement in the disability rights movement, are significant parts of who I am,” Sherman said in her announcement statement. “I was the stimulus behind the 2014 creation of a City commission on people with disabilities.”

Sherman also created community arts and culture activities, including exhibits, performances, and readings at Norwich Arts Center and Otis Library, including exhibits on Cape Verdean stone masons, young cultural newcomers, modern local architecture, culturally expressive gardens, and the Jewish agricultural history in eastern Connecticut.

As a council candidate, Sherman said she would concentrate on public education, economic development and neighborhood revitalization.

Democratic Town Committee Chairman Larry Goldman said candidates seeking the party nomination for City Council, Board of Education and city treasurer must contact him by May 30. The town committee will endorse candidates at its July 23 meeting.
