Water still cold, DEEP reminds Connecticut boaters

The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection reminded boaters Friday that with this weekend’s forecast calling for sun and air temperatures in the upper 50s, the temperatures of state waters are still in the 40s, meaning that falling into the water can cause serious injury or death due to hypothermia.

Opening day for the 2015 trout season is tomorrow, April 11th and fishermen and boaters are reminded to dress for the water temperature, not air temperature,” DEEP Boating Division Director Eleanor Mariani said in a news release.

Between 2004 and 2014, 68 people were treated for hypothermia as a result of boating accidents, DEEP said. Of these cases, 52 injuries occurred during Connecticut’s cold water months, October through May.

“Boaters are reminded that they are legally required to wear a life jacket while in a manually propelled vessel from Oct. 1 through May 31,” said Capt. Ryan Healy of DEEP’s Environmental Conservation Police.

A person immersed in cold water has a much better chance of survival if they are wearing a life jacket.

Every vessel is required to have a properly fitting life jacket for every person aboard, and children under age 13 must wear a life jacket at all times while underway, unless the child is below deck or in an enclosed cabin.
