Voters approve Lyme-Old Lyme schools' budget

Lyme and Old Lyme voters approved on Tuesday a budget of $32,547,409 for the Lyme-Old Lyme School district for 2015-16.

The new budget represents a 1.83 percent increase over the current year's adopted spending plan.

With a total of 524 votes cast from both towns during Tuesday's referendum, the results came down to 418 votes in favor and 106 opposed.

Lyme residents voted 122 to 19 in support of the budget, and Old Lyme residents voted 296 to 87 in favor of the budget.

"Certainly, we're pleased with the results," said Superintendent of Schools Ian Neviaser. "We brought forward a responsible budget that continues to support all of our programs, and the continued show of support from voters I think speaks highly to the level of interest in education in our two towns."

Neviaser said the district's budgets have averaged around a 1.5 percent increase over the past three years, which he attributes in part to declining student enrollment, as well as strong fiscal management.
