North Stonington to have special town meeting Monday

North Stonington — The Board of Selectmen Tuesday night set a special town meeting, where two issues will be discussed, for Monday.

The first item is meant to clarify the wording residents saw at the Oct. 20, 2014, special town meeting where they approved an additional appropriation for a $245,400 Small Town Economic Assistance Program grant.

The wording failed to mention that the grant money — which will extend the village water line by 1,500 feet — will be placed in the town's capital nonrecurring fund.

The selectmen Tuesday night said the town could lose the money at the end of the fiscal year, June 30, if the clarification is not made.

Residents also will hear and act upon a request from the town's resident state troopers for a $25,700 state Department of Transportation rural road grant.

The portion used for equipment, $4,000, is 100 percent reimbursable, while the rest is 90 percent reimbursable. That leaves the town with a cost of $2,170.

The resident state troopers plan to purchase a second solar-powered speed display, which shows residents how fast they're going as they drive past, with the $4,000. It will be similar to the sign currently on Wyassup Road near the fairgrounds.

The troopers plan to use the remaining funds to increase patrols in rural problem areas, that may not always get as much attention as other regions of town.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the New Town Hall conference room.
