New London names first Pedestrian Advisory Committee appointees

Editor's note: This corrects an earlier version of this article.

New London — The City Council on Monday night established a Pedestrian Advisory Committee to advise the mayor and council on policies to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility, and to promote walking as a primary means of transportation in the Whaling City.

The committee was initially proposed in March by Councilor Michael Passero, who said the committee should first be tasked with recommending a “comprehensive plan directed at sidewalk snow removal” in response to “serious safety issues in the city created by the lack of sidewalk access due to inadequate snow removal.”

Though the full scope of the committee’s duties are yet to be determined, the Pedestrian Advisory Committee in Minneapolis, Minn., which Passero said is the model on which he based his proposal, has advocated for pedestrian-friendly improvements to specific streets, proposed changes to city snow removal ordinances and suggested changes to the city’s traffic patterns.

The fledgling committee is to be made up of seven members who will be appointed by the City Council to serve staggered two-year terms.

Four members will be appointed in even years and three members will be appointed in odd years.

On Monday, the City Council appointed Terry Horton, Jeffrey Hart, John Olivia, Jessie Damon and Kathryn Cole to the Pedestrian Advisory Committee, City Clerk Jonathan Ayala said.

Other residents interested in serving on the committee can submit an application at the clerk’s office, Ayala said.
