North Stonington Republican Town Committee resignations leave three vacant positions

North Stonington — The Republican Town Committee remains without a chairman, vice chairman and treasurer following the recent resignation of two members.

Selectman Bob Testa, formerly chairman, resigned his position in order to register as unaffiliated shortly after missing the committee's nod for first selectman by a vote of 62-51 July 28. He said he still plans to run for first selectman in the fall, as he did in the 2007, 2011 and 2013 elections.

Testa, who said parties don't really define him, has been registered as unaffiliated in the past. He said he wanted to see the July 28 caucus through before resigning his position.

Sandra Steinhart, the current vice chairman who would have become chairman in Testa's absence, also resigned her position. She also resigned from the position of treasurer.

Steinhart, who said she's been chairperson on and off for about 22 years, resigned because she doesn't support the party-endorsed ticket of Shawn Murphy as first selectman and Nick Mullane as selectman.

"You're going to get the same old stuff with Shawn and Nick," she said, referring to the six years the two spent as running mates from 2007 through 2012. "My thought is I would like to see the town go forward."

Steinhart remains a member of the RTC and said she plans to support Testa in whatever way she can.

RTC Secretary Gladys Chase said the committee did not have a quorum at its special meeting last Thursday and thus could not fill any of the vacancies. She hopes it will be able to do so at its Aug. 24 regular meeting.
