Stonington Democrats endorse Rotella to run for selectman

Stonington — The Democratic Town Committee on Monday night unanimously endorsed Mystic resident Kate Rotella to run for the Board of Selectmen.

The committee chose Rotella, who works as the purchasing agent for the Town of Waterford, after the party’s original choice, Jim Sisk, notified the town committee that he had to withdraw from the race because of a health issue.

Rotella originally was selected by the party’s nominating committee to run for the position but stepped aside at the July caucus when Sisk expressed interest in running for selectman.

She will now replace him on the ticket.

In announcing her endorsement, the town committee said Rotella is also the legislative chair for the Purchasing Association of Connecticut and co-chair of the Purchasing Council for the Capital Region Council of Governments.

She also was appointed to the Finance Council of the National Institute of Government Procurement.

“Crouse and Rotella are public servants, not professional politicians,” said Town Committee Chairman Scott Bates in a news release. “Crouse and Rotella are the team in this campaign who have actual experience running town government on a day to day basis.”

Last week, Rotella said she decided to run against unaffiliated incumbent Selectman Mike Spellman, who has been endorsed by the Republicans, because she wants to become more involved in town politics.

“I feel strongly about this town. This is where I’ve lived all of my adult life,” she said.

She said she stepped aside in July because it was in the best interests of her party and the town.
