YMCA temporarily withdraws application for Mystic expansion and renovation

Mystic — The Ocean Community YMCA temporarily has withdrawn its application to expand and renovate its Mystic branch.

The Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission had slated an Oct. 20 public hearing on the application for a special use permit but that now has been cancelled.

YMCA Executive Director Maureen Fitzgerald explained Tuesday that the YMCA withdrew the application because it needs to address some issues the Town of Stonington has raised with the original application.

She said the YMCA hopes to be back with a revised application in 60 to 90 days.

“We’ve had good meetings with our members and neighbors, so we’re off to a good start,” she said.

The $7.2 million project calls for demolishing a portion of the building, adding a 12,500-square-foot addition to the rear and renovating the remainder of the building.

Plans also call for using the baseball field next to the parking lot for additional parking.

There would be a second-floor wellness center with exercise equipment as well as exercise studios, much like the expansive one at the Westerly branch. It would have large windows overlooking the Mystic River.

Plans also call for improved handicapped access, new locker rooms including family and special needs locker rooms and a new entrance area.

An architectural rendering shows a large glass façade at the rear overlooking the Mystic River.

The YMCA plans to launch a capital campaign to help fund the majority of the project much like it did for its $8 million renovation and expansion of its Westerly-Pawcatuck branch, which was completed in 2013.
