AFSCME Council 4 endorses Passero for mayor in New London

Council 4 AFSCME, a statewide union whose membership includes New London public service workers, announced last week it had endorsed Michael Passero for mayor.

“He is a proven leader and advocate who understands the needs and concerns of his community, and who is committed to working with our union members for the betterment of the city,” Council 4 Executive Director Sal Luciano said in a news statement.

Passero faces Bill Vogel, the Republican nominee for mayor, in the Nov. 3 municipal election.

Passero received the unanimous endorsement of Council 4’s Delegate Assembly during its Oct. 9 meeting at Council 4 headquarters in New Britain.

“Voters want to see a candidate who will stand up for an economy that works for everyone,” David Kotecki, president of AFSCME Local 1378, the New London Public Works Union, said in a statement.

Todd Lynch, president of AFSCME Local 724, the local police union, said Passero would make a great mayor.

“Front-line public safety employees know in New London that Mike Passero walks the walk. He knows instinctively that a vibrant city needs safe streets and secure communities, and he understands the challenges we face as police officers who have chosen to serve and protect,” Lynch said in a statement.
