Butler, Swift, Menihan begin Mashantucket council terms

Mashantucket — Chairman Rodney Butler and two other Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council members began three-year council terms Monday following an inauguration ceremony at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center, the tribe announced.

Jean Swift, the council treasurer, and Daniel Menihan Jr. joined Butler in taking the oath of office. All three were elected Nov. 1 in voting among tribal members.

The seven-member council governs the tribe and oversees management of the tribe’s Foxwoods Resort Casino and other enterprises. The Mashantuckets have partnered with the Mohegan Tribe, which owns Mohegan Sun, in a bid to develop a third Connecticut casino in the Hartford area.

Butler began his fifth consecutive term on the council and third straight as chairman. Swift, whom the council recently reappointed treasurer, began her first full council term, having been elected in 2013 to fill a vacancy created by a resignation. Menihan began his first term.

Fatima Dames, serving her third council term, was sworn in as vice chairwoman, a position she previously held from 2012 to 2014. Tribal members elected her vice chairwoman in November after Crystal Whipple, the previous vice chairwoman, failed to retain her council seat. Other council members who were not up for re-election in November are Marjorie Colebut-Jackson, the council secretary, Roy Colebut-Ingram and Richard E. Sebastian.

Also Monday, Anthony Sebastian began his fourth consecutive term as secretary/treasurer of the tribe’s three-member Elders Council.

In a statement, the tribe said:

“The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council and Elders Council look forward to a productive 2016. We remain committed to working together to improve and diversify our tribal economy, as well as continuing to ensure the health, safety and prosperity for our community, employees and guests.”
