Groton man wins $1 million Powerball prize

While thousands of people across the state are buying lottery tickets for a chance to win some or all of Saturday's estimated $700 million Powerball jackpot, a Groton man on Tuesday collected $1 million.

Romel Llivizaca of Groton quietly presented his winning Powerball Quick Pick ticket for the Jan. 2 drawing at lottery headquarters in Rocky Hill and claimed his $1 million prize, according to the CT Lottery website.

The first five numbers on Llivizaca's ticket — 5-6-15-29-42 — were a perfect match, but he missed the Powerball number, 10.

Connecticut sold 31,051 winning Powerball tickets for that date, with prizes ranging from $4 to $1 million.

The Henny Penny at 273 Meriden Waterbury Turnpike in Southington sold the winning ticket and will receive a $2,500 check from the Connecticut Lottery.

Saturday's estimated Powerball jackpot will have a cash value of $428.4 million, according to the lottery.
