Stonington PZC to hold hearing Tuesday on YMCA project
Mystic -- The Stonington Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing Tuesday night on an application from the Ocean Community YMCA to build a 12,500-square-foot addition and create additional parking.
The hearing is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Mystic Middle School.
The $7.2 million plan calls for demolishing a portion of the building, adding a 12,500-square-foot addition to the rear and renovating the remainder of the building. There would be improved handicapped access, new locker rooms including family and special needs locker rooms and a new entrance area. The YMCA plans to launch a capital campaign to help fund the majority of the project and is also seeking a state grant to offset the cost.
According to the a staff report prepared by Town Planner Keith Brynes, a traffic study done for the project concludes the expansion would not have a significant impact on traffic while the 165 parking spots would be sufficient for the expected increase in membership.
